  • Best Path to Nitro

    Hi All,

I am looking to move to Nitro in summer 2010 and was wondering what the best path to take is?

i.e buy a full combo setup or start picking up bits and pieces over the next few months to complete a build.

Also, is there much savings to be had second hand over new when purchased in a bundle?

I think, you should buy an airframe kit & equip it yourself with bits that people on this forum recommend.

That way you get the experience of the build and don't have to upgrade combo bits that have been put into the kit to make it price-attractive.

Yes, you will save around 50% second-hand compared to new but depending upon age, spec etc . But you will need to buy carefully to avoid a 'dog'

    Cheers

Whether you are making a transition from electric or just simply taking the plunge straight into nitro the best advice is to join a club or group but don't do it alone. Also the club environment can provide best advice on manufacturers and models particularly until you are at a stage where you have enough knowledge to make your own mind up.
My personal advice is to buy new, this way there there will be fewer surprises. Later, when you have progressed a bit you may take the decicion to aquire a "previously enjoyed" heli into your own hands.

Most shops will do a great deal so shop around and enjoy it!

Hi I've started this road to Nitro
going down the, by an airframe and kit it out as I go route, will I think work out dearer than just buying a combo but I'll get what I want in the end :-)
If I bought a brand new one I'd be even more scared about binning it lol

You can buy full kits of the Trex 600 or 700 which are a really good way into nitro.

I bought a 700 nitro kit from Flying Hobby. Came with all electrics, engine, muffler and even an Align Starter for less than the stock kit was in the UK!

          Flying-Hobby.com

The best way to get into it in my book. Buying seperately, depending on which heli you go for, can be very expensive in the long run.

The 700 was my first nitro and so I made a few mistakes.

All I will say is, REMEMBER TO CONNECT THE PRESSURE PIPE FROM THE TANK TO THE MUFFLER. I didn't and subsequently knackered my piston and sleeve. Would hate for anyone else to do this.

Other than that take it slow, don't rush and double triple check everything for loctite etc.

          Good luck

Wil1972, what helis have you come from? Cos a TRex600N is just a big TRex, with common build themes. There are lots of 600N guys here, and parts are readily available. Great heli also - my first nitro.

Hi, 450 at the moment. Was thinking along the lines of a 600N - I think a few months off yet but wanted to get a few opinions so i dont have a "sh&t I wish I knew that before shelling out the ££" moment which seems to regularly accompany this hobby. The watchful eye of Her in doors is always there so it is sometimes best to smooth the cost over a few months rather then spring one lump sum on her :-P

If another heli turned up before christmas it could be a very bad holiday season for me I'll be looking prob feb / march time once I am confident enough on the 450. If you're selling a 600 around that time I may be in the market

I'm going to nitro as well next year. I have already started collecting all the 'extra' bit off this forum. I have a sparton 760 gyro, align 2 in 1, and Govnor off here, so just 4 servo's to go. I already have a Rx spare, so will prob get 600LE (fast lads £350) and OS 55 plus pipe.
