  • 700 Turbine completed.

Only problem is its not mine, instead a friends. He has only hovered it a few times so far. I'll hopefully get a good demo on the weekend. He brought it round today to show me. It uses the Wren 44 turbine with integral electric start (the starter motor is the black bit at the front of the turbine). The ECU is above the turbine on the left side and the bottle at the back is for the butane is uses to start the turbine (before the kerosene is used). Its definitely a kilo or two heavier than my 700 that's for sure! He sensibly opted for the mod 1 main gear setup !

Looks very impressive - though I'm not quite sure I'd be too keen on turbines for 3D. I remember watching BobJ's flameout at the 3D masters on the top field in the evening - if there was a medal for how far away in the distance could you auto and land in one piece then Bob's got that one in the bag.....

Alot of £££ to drop out the sky.....

On the plus side I suppose - if there was as good a smell as nitro in the morning or sound its a turbine for sure....

How much flight time will tank give ?

I saw a wren turbine powered 700 on Saturday at Box Hill. It was ever so pleasant sounding, a bit quieter than some turbine helis I have seen.

I think it's the cost per crash I'd be worried about Martin!!

He doesn't know how long it will fly yet. Maybe around 10 mins. It actually has two fuel tanks running in parallel (they are massive). Have a look how far they go out the frame ! (they are touching together inside the frames).

I was about to ask where did he get that tank from. I didn't notice it being two together - I presume that cable tie is keeping them together plus some epoxy. 10mins flight - not sure if thats average or longer than the norm, I know that if that was a gasser with that size of tanks its more like 30mins.....

The synergy we just completed runs for 9.5 minutes on 2 tanks in parallel, around 1.2 litres. The fuel cost 63p a litre, the aeroshell oil was £13 for a litre, which will make 80 litres, so total cost per litre is around 79p or 95p per flight. Not bad! I will hopefully get a video of me 3Ding the turbine at the weekend

you are a brave man to 3D somebody else's turbine.

I saw Climb-Outs Synergy turbine at 3D Masters on the practice field a couple of years back. That had a standard tank and was good for about 3 minutes. This kept the weight down and meant you had a massive amount of power but standard weight....... it was rather impressive until it crashed, unfortunately that was the end of it's appearances and the crowd never got to see it go.

It flies really really well. I won't be flying it hard like I do my own, but te owner has said he wants me to fly it in a similar way to the way I fly mine. I flew some gentle graceful 3d last weeked with it and it handled it with ease. It will be a fair bit lighter than climbouts one as that uses the much heavier and older mw54. The new mw44 I much lighter, and make almost the same power, but with lower fuel consumption

Does look jolly nice. A bit rich for my blood tho. Any idea on the total cost?
