  • My Trex 700 journey

Bought myself a 700 nitro about a month ago. This was my first foray into the world of nitro so wasn't really sure what to expect. The build went well but had it's moments. The engine really frustrated me as I had many issues with getting the parts on and off the main shaft of the engine. I also made a bit of a mistake in that I didn't see anywhere in the manual about the pressure pipe from the tank to the muffler so on my maiden flight I managed to destroy the piston, ring and sleeve. All got some nice scoring and then the engine wasn't making enough compression to start but was getting lots of smoke from the pipe. In the end I bought a new engine and the old one is with a mate who is trying to see if it can be fixed or not. Now that I have everything setup right though I am enjoying it loads. So much power and so agile. Had a bit of a stupid moment last week and forgot about checking the fuel level, it was my first idle up flight and ran out of fuel. Not sure why the engine came back to life and screamed it's head off though but checked over and flew yesterday and it's perfect so not to worry. So far the pain of the journey has been worth the destination and I can start enjoying it.

Bah, I've got it figured out now . Besides, the engine should have just cut out and not come back to life like that. Still no idea why that happened. Just a bit different from leccy heli's so took me a while to get it sussed. So far though this thing has so much power. Spent about 3 mins doing tick tocks yesterday and it was just like the sim. Love it.

yep, as they run out of fuel they take in loads of air which makes them rev up... not ideal. Seems like you were lucky this time.

When I made the change from leccy to nitro, I used to land with half a tank. My concentration span was only about 4 minutes!!, took a while before I could fly out a whole tank of nitro without landing.

            Glad you like the 700....

I now land with about 1/4 tank left to avoid this situation. I broke a main blade and the landing gear in that crash so not totally lucky but could have been a lot worse. Still, lesson learnt and I now have a timer set when I bring her in and check fuel level.

I don't have a header tank. Perhaps time to invest in one though.

well worth doing ,get the os bubbless clunk aswell for your main tank.simple job to fit both.

Sorry, just remembered, its not so easy to change the clunk on the 700 as it is on the 600.still well worth doing.

With no governor you will get the revving up as it goes lean (we don't set the needle for maximum power, but keep it just a little rich of that - becuase its too close to getting too hot). One advantage of not using a governor is its easier to notice any change in motor power -the governor just changes the throttle to get the rpm it wants.
The normal way is to have the governor not working in normal mode so you can do some full power climb outs in normal to check the motor tuning before gong to idle up with the governor on.
