  • T-Rex 700: Check your boom supports

I didn't even know there was a screw, until it came loose...
one more flight and it would have been gone. BTW, the "burning 700 electric" video this week looked like a failed boom support.

I always thought boom supports were just a bit of decoration til I had one of my 600 ones come loose, it was vibrating like mad, and barely controlable. I always check them regularly now!

These little screws are an absolute pain in the a$$e and I really wish align would change the design slightly. Even if they put in 1.5mm screws rather than 0.7mm so they are easier to change / tighten. Now, I always take the ends off and epoxy them in place now and then put the little screw back in and never have any trouble but it is a bit of a ballache. The synergy boom supports are ideal but I think a little shorter. I have tried the synergy boom ends on the 700 carbon rod, but they dont fit which is a shame. I often see these little screws 'hanging out' of other 700's at various fly ins as they are easily missed, so it is important to keep an eye on them.

I have used CA like Tom suggests and that does work, but if you do need to get the little screw out for whatever reason, it is impossible and very often in a crash, it is worth saving the boom support ends as sometimes they can be re-used. However, if you use epoxy, just heat the end up carefully and the epoxy melts..... (if can be done without melting the support end..... promise!

Just built two new 700 LE's and epoxyed the boom ends on one machine and left the other.... after 4 flights, both ends were loose on the one I had not expoxyed and had slight tail vibrations / boom movement.

Just something to be aware of...

              cheers

Save yourselves loads of hassle lads. Take those widdly wee pins out as they break or pull through the carbon rod in short order. Get the drill out and replace with Raptor frame self tappers or similiar, even better If you can remove the end roughen, add epoxy as well for longevity.

Another wee tip is to re-torque the bolts as the plastic ends compress under the washers after a short time. Best added to your regular checks.

                cheers Brian
