  • Strange noise?

    Some more advice needed here.

My TR600 nsp has started making a funny sort of metalic "ting ting" noise, almost like the pinking noise a car makes when the timing's slightly out.

It happens mostly when I do left hand piros, and hard stops.

I'd put it down to my MP5 as I'd read somewhere they gave off a metalic pingy noise. However today I tried my old Zimereman muffler and the noise is still there.

I've changed the mainshaft bearings, front torque tube bearings, and gone round and tightened every bolt & screw on it but it's still there.

I did the engine bearings, about 15 litres ago, I realise that this means nothing and they could be shot again, but before I go thru all that performance has anyone got any other suggestions?

    Cheers
    Guy

Do you have any up and down movement in your starter shaft/ clutch bell??

Had a similiar occurrence with my old 600.

That's something I'll check, it certainly sound like it's coming from inside the frame.

      Thanks.

Check the cylinder head bolts on the hyper are tight - mine sounded similar and one had almost fallen out ! and was rattling about in the head!

I'm going to pull the engine out in the morning to check the clutch so I will check that out at the same time.

I'd like to bet its your gyro working overtime because the engine "may" be running rich or similar.

Try setting 7 degrees of pitch on your tail blades so the heli hovers in rate mode.

            I bet your noise dissapears.

            Ask me how I know.

              How do you know?

That's a very interesting point cause I have been running a bit on the rich side, I'm geting 5m:30s on a tank, (no header) I was thinking about leaning it off a little.

It makes sense cause I always used to use 10% contest but recently swapped to 10% coptamix I only leaned it off about an 1/8th of a turn, but it was running well so left it at that, but now I think about it that would have been about the time the noise started!

Not sure how to measure tail blade pitch though, what do you line the guage up to?

Using the smaller pitch guage set to 7 degrees and use the boom as a reference point viewing from above.

                Hope this helps.

Its happened to me on a couple of my helis that had Spartan gyros fitted.

Might just be your problem, Easiest way to find out is fly your heli in rate mode and see.

5m 30s, what the hell are you doing with it? Should be getting nearer 8 - minutes out of it depending on your flying I'd have thought.

                              I fly hard!!!!

No not really, just too rich, and scared to go near the bottomof the tank.

Leaned it off today, fitted my header, and got 9mins!

And my noise was the clutch bearings!
