  • First "crash"!

    Hi guys

Had my first crash today. Took my 600 to the field, had it checked over by one of the experienced pilots and, having flown it and made a few minor tweaks, he gave it the thumbs up.

So I filled her up and after about half a tank of reasonably good and stable hovering, I bought her down just a smidgeon too hard and tail slightly down.

On kicking the throttle back to idle, I could hear some unusual clicking sounds and, upon inspection, I've popped a couple of teeth off the front umbrella gear.

I'll strip the tail down over the coming days to make sure I've not done anything else but, on initial inspection, I think that's all I broke.

It would appear the TT tails are far more delicate on the tail than the belt drive, or was I just unlucky?

Still, I've broken my repair cherry eh?

Thats not a crash. Thats a slight mishap

You can use a longer vertical stabiliser to keep the tail out the dirt.

That has always been a problem, when I was starting I had a spare boom block that I could change in 10 mins and be airborne again.

Now I have replaced the rear fin with a 700N one. Direct replacement, no re drilling and gives an extra couple of cm to protect the tail blades.

What a really good idea If I ever get my 600 I will certainly make this adjustment.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll buy the 700N tail fin.

I'm seeing two sorts of umbrella gear - one in white plastic and one in grey. Mine is grey but is the white one any more or less durable?

The grey was intended for the nitro and the white for the electric!

The reason, the grey wouldn't show dirt as much - nitro, oil etc (or so I was informed!)

White are the newer version, don't know about being any stronger grey was the original colour.

The FDR has been forwarded to the AAIB for interrogation so don't have that data. Here's a pic tho:

Yea just a mishap, my crash cherry was with my 1st Trex & it was some kind of electronic or rx failure (brownout?) that slammed it into the deck, done the chicken dance until it spat the lipo & totalled my heli (well almost).

                            Ouch Paddy! Not good!

Just finished my inspection and confirmed that it was just the forward tail drive gear that had failed - one tooth from the front umbrella gear and three from the umbrella portion of the front drive gear assembly. Main tail drive and the gears on the rotor end are all fine.

Just pressed BUY on the spares and a 700 tail fin.

Oh, and here's the log book entries requested by crash-alot:
