  • Which Starter Shaft?

    Hi Guys

Having now received my Sullivan Hi-Tork starter, I'm wondering which starter shaft I should get.

Having looked on the forum, I see most recommend the Robbe shaft, or maybe the K&S. However I only wanna spend £15-20 so won't be buying either of those.

Has anyone any recommendations for a shaft in my price range (or less)?

And is ball end preferable, or should I buy parallel?

    Cheers.
    Martin

ok £30 but other type that push into starting cone work but when they start slipping or you need to push down so hard skid are bending. Lots of effort to get nack. They fit and forget and end come's off easy for storage.

I assume the 600 has a one-way bearing so you don't need the shaft to have a one-way bearing in it. (I happen to have one heli that does not, the Sceadu evo 50, all the rest have their own one-way bearing on the heli).

If all you need is a rigid 6mm hex shaft than they are cheap. And in fact I have several spares and would sell one even cheaper.

You can keep spending money now and again on the £20 jobbies, or you can buy the Robbe wand now and have done with it.

            Just my 2p
            Cheers,

It was replaced before it started to slip. MrKev changed it for me, as experience with K&S one way bearing and 90 size helis I know they don't mix

                What, like here?

I just checked the specs on the one way bearing I used, and It's rated for 5.3Nm torgue. The Sullivan Dynatron, operating on 24V has a stall torque of 4.8Nm, and the Hi-Torq in question above has a stall torque of 1.5Nm, so should offer reliable service.

To further answer Mart61's OP, I personally think a ball end is good, as it allows you to not have to come exactly vertically into the hex on the heli, and also makes it easier to get it out once it's started. I've struggled to remove other peoples starters with straight shafts once started in the past.

I would also echo the point made by Trillian, in that the Trex 600 has a built on one-way, so you can get away with a cheap direct drive shaft, these are around £10 new, or for that matter a length of hex bar in a cordless drill chuck.

Saying that, I can vouch for Russ as a good seller, and I beleive to the best of my knowledge that the start shaft in question is still in good condition too!

I use a cheap ball end shaft on my 600n, I made a sleeve that screws direct onto the Hi torque starter and the shaft fits in all held with grub screws, I start the engine and let the starter stop turning then remove it, I have had no problems with it. I have a spare sleeve if you are interested in it Martin it is made for a 7mm shaft and is tapped 1/4 UNC.

That was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. I ended up buying the Robbe as I couldn't find a simple bolt/ clamp on coupling.

Sport on, so far after 12 months it looks like the last starter shaft I'll ever buy, especially if you use the straight hex end, not the ball

                          Yes.
I'm not a fan of the ball ends - if they slip in the coupling (due to wear and tear) they can be a right sod to get out.
I only use straight ends now.

                          Cheers,
