  • 600 Tail shaking

Hi guys i have a problem with a vibration on my 600.
It has a shaking vertical stab and it seems this is coming from the drive train some where but i cant track it down. I have changed the engine bearings twice but no joy
Anyone have an issue with the clutch stack bearings.

Has this vibration only just started, or have you had it for a while?

I wasn't happy with my 600 - It shook a lot and also upset the gyro. The two things that I changed that made the most difference where the fan - Fitted a Quick UK fan (You haven't by any chance only got 1 gov magnet in your fan??) and I replaced the boom struts as I found the original ones to be a little flimsy. I used Sceadu ones to prove the point and then fitted Quick Carbon struts.

If you've got the torque tube driven tail check the front drive gear as mine developed excessive play up and down in the bearings.

          Hi Mike
Dont think its the tail as the vibration can be felt all down the boom with the blades stopped. If you place your finger on the back plate there is no vibe but if you place it near the front bearing journal or on top of the starter shaft it gets alot worse.
The heli has a belt tail and a metal align upgrade fan.

A few I know with 600's tend to change the fan with the metal one ... could be notchy bearings ...if its just started doing it then more than likely points to bearings in that area .. always a pita trying to track something down when it just starts on its own ...

Yep i agree, beter with the metal fans, also have you got equal gov magnets, i.e not just one side.
Also could the starter shaft of been bent, trying to start with vapour lock etc, worth checking Martin

Could be loads of things. Although the brgs are not great quality and can be a little notchy they last for ages. I'm not an Alloy fan lover either and the plastic one does the job.

The tail fins are prone to vibration depending on which ones are fitted, some are only 1.6mm and do vibrate noticeably especially on a rich motor settings in the hover.

Have you dial indicated the clutch stack after rebuilding the motor?

Try a little change in Head speed.. richen the motor first..keep checking the backplate for temp..try going leaner..BUT..always try richer first as you dont want a cooked motor..

If the clutch has started dragging suddenly a shoe could have spread causing an imbalance.

After all this it may well be the just the thin fin material/thickness

                hope you get it..Brian

Didnt think it would be needed on a 50

                    Just an update.
I took the engine out & am going to take it in to work & dial the fan in.
On further inspection there is an awfull lot of side to side & front to back slop on the clutch bell so I have ordered from fastlad a set of bearings & a new starter shaft just to be sure.
Now I'm just praying fastlad live upto there name & get me the bits so I can enjoy the bank holiday weekend especialy Sunday

The total run out for the fan is only .0025" is that acceptable?

I dont worry about the fan to much Martin.. I dial the clutch itself as its top of the stack and the heavy bit, a plastic fan will run true at high RPM if its reasonably straight.

One of mine is visibly out but makes little difference. (early 600N prior to the thicker one now supplied) I always fit two magnets but dont really think its really necessary as these motors are single pot and will only balance at one RPM and its anyones guess what RPM that will be..I would take a stab at 15000-17000 but its a pure guess.

On one of my Hyper 50's I cut away part of the Web as at the time it was supposed to be a rear brg saver.. runs just as well as the other motor. In hindsight It was the bloddy Magnum...LOL

The bit I try and get right is the Clutch. I dial the shoe just level with the securing bolt on both sides. I settle for anything under 2 thou. I've had one thats 10 thou out, but rotating the shoe 180 deg on the hub and pushing it sideways as its bolted up had it at under 2 thou.

The reason I like to get the clutch close is it will run true in the clutch bell and not be wobbling which will load both pinion and motor bearings.

BTW The bigger Pinion brg is the same size as one of the Main shaft bearings from memory.

It wont do any harm to replace the bearing anyway

                        cheers Brian

                          Hello fella

I am a new member to this site and don't have a great amount of experiance but i had the same problem on my 600n and on inspectionthe bearings that go between the starter shaft and the clutch bell were shot and when i took them apart the lower bearing actually broke up. Also the main shaft bearings had gone notchy so i replaced them as well i haven't test flown them yet but i have started it up and let it spin up and all the vibrtations had gone (the vibratons got so bad that the rubber end on the pip was violently shaking). I aslo had the same sort of problem on my 500 and that was the main shaft bearings as well so some thing to check.

                          Good luck

                          Neil
                          Regards
