  • Header Tank for 600NSP yes/no why?

    Hi guys,

I'm wondering if you all got a header tank for your T-Rex 600 NSP.

At the moment I haven't one but considering to build one on the heli.
I guess the pros would be constant feeding and a reserve tank?
If so, what Header tank are you using (where to buy) and would it be easy to install?

    Thanx for you advice!
    Robin.

Nope, just a fuel magnet but plenty of others swear by them.

the std tank is small enough.
A rappy or Quk header tank stuck on the side with double sided tape and a tiewrap round it for security.
Robgt swore the double sided tape was secure enough without the tie wrap!

Got mine on for the constant fuel flow and also so i can drain the whole main tank when flying.

        cheers

I had a fuel magnet disintegrate, restrict fuel flow, causing leaning out .......... and by the time I'd realised I had a hole in the piston!

For me therefore a header tank solves any fuel flow problems without the need for an expensive piece of foam for a clunk! It also gives a little more fuel and therefore time per flight. I have a Quick UK one fitted with spare Align bits (hex main bearing holder spacer, speciality washers and self tapping screws). To stop the tank pivoting on the mount I also have a small section of velcro between the main and header.

The other advantage of a header tank is when the heli is flipping about, the clunk could at some point be out of the fuel in the tank i.e. in air.
If/when this happens the air is pulled into the header tank but since this is almost always full then the clunk in the header doesn't suffer this problem and you will have a constant flow of fuel to the engine all the time.
I have mine stuck on the side of the main tank with industrial grade velcro.
Hasn't budged since the day it was put on and some 8-10 gallons on.

Thats unlucky but may have been prevented.

My fuel magnets have been in my 600's all year with absolutely no problems. They disintegrate when people dont refill the tank immediately after a flight which allows the exhaust gases to attack the foam. Also, you must keep the tank full of fuel even when storing at home to stop the foam drying out.

Using a fuel filter is good practice also which will stop any foriegn bodies reaching the engine should the worst happen.

I think header tanks are a good idea but I just use fuel magnets. My magnets have saved me where a normal clunk would have caused the engine to choke with a low fuel level. My mate uses a header and a magnet!! Belt and braces!!

Just a fuel magnet for me, but I am considering a header tank after reading the advice on here!

Quick UK do a header tank mounting kit comprising of three spacers and 6 x various length bolts. Using this kit you can mount a header tank on the middle bearing block fixings no problems. Well there is the header tank is sligthly higher than the carb. I've done this on my 600NSP. The kit is available from Fast Lads (£5.95 i think) but is well made and tidy comes in various colours as well.

Used that kit on my 700, the 600 already had one on when I got it.

I like the header tank its never given me any problems, the idea of the fuel magnets is good, but I just dont like the idea of leaving fuel in it to keep the thing wet, as ive been told the only time you get problems with them is when they dry out.
                      All the best

I think there is another problem with leaving fuel in the tank and that is the tubing tends to disintegrate faster.
                        It goes soft an gooey.

                          Adrian,
I thought the general consensus on here was to leave the tank full between flights, which stops the clunk line from drying out and splitting and removes the exhaust gasses from the tank.

Yes Shaun, your right, the exhaust gasses do attack the tubing, so your better off filling the tank after a flight rather than before the next one, however im talking about at the end of the day when you take it home and its sitting on a shelf for a week or maybe two, thats when I dont like leaving it soaking in fuel.
                            All the best

Cheers Tony, I'll let you know when I strip mine down in the spring, thats when I guess the clunk line will need replacing anyway at about the 6 month old point.
