  • Trex 600 NSP Align 50 hyper question

    Folks,

Just built T-Rex NSP and thanks to some of the build tips on the 600 forum went together very well. I took it to the field yesterday for the first time. Everything went well until I tried to start the engine (Align 50 H). The engine was set at factory settings, valve at factory set and main screw at 1.5 to 1.75 turns out. I have had 2 Hypers before and run them in on these settings with no problems. This one runs poorly as if it's choked and dies. Hydrolocks everytime. Tried leaning it a bit but does the same. Doesn't want to run more than 15 - 20 seconds. Tried various settings to be honest. I have new fuel pipe etc (not align stuff). Tried again this morning in the garage just incase it was too cold yesterday and has made no difference. Anyone else had any thing similar? I am going to try an old carb of a OS 50 hyper to see what that does. Generally I've never had a problem with OS engines and assuming the Align 50 H is just badged shouldn't have a problem with this one either?

Bit of a p***er really was looking forward to having a blast, best weekend we've had for yonks

    Hi

There can be slight variations between all engines to try carefully leaning out both needles, it will probably the main needle that needs to go in furthest though.

All my hyper 50's have run at about 1 turn open once run in and this is on 30% fuel so lower nitro will need the needle in further still.
Also try a different plug as very very occationally you get a plug that does not work well from new.
In any case I always find that the running in process means the plug element gets coats in fine Ali particals so will need changing after a few tanks anyway.

    Cheers

Bob J Thanks, what I've done so far is: New plug (enya 3) tried various carb settings every time run like a dog and hydrolocked my flying colleague called in earlier to give me moral support but even he was stumped. Tried running the engine with no pressure pipe on main tank still same?

In the end fitted another carb from one of my old Hypers put the carb settings to factory default and started again. Guess what runs a dream? Going to run a few tanks through the engine first and try original carb again. Will contact LHS tomorrow and see what they suggest. At the end of the day not everyone has a carb or two laying about to diagnose potential problems.

Thanks for your ideas Bob J much appreciated. Shaun

My OS50 Hyper in the 600N runs around 1 turn out at mid point of the Carbsmart range but actually runs it leaner than this ,most of the time. A fellow flyer has just fitted one to his 600N and he's also finding it's running under 1 turn out most, if not all, of the time. I'm running 30% Optimix and he's still on 20% Wildcat at the moment, although he's swapping to 20% optimix when he can finally finish the Wildcat off.

Incidentley, he had to replace the rear bearing in his Hyper after around 10 gallons, last Sunday it was sounding pretty noisy again, another 10 gallons or so through it. It will be interesting to see how long the bearings last running Optimix.

            Busterboy,

Yep you learn something every day! Well I did today. Not a bad set of lads at Leeds. Started the heli up again yesterday run OK. This being the first Trex 600 at our club I'm feeling my way on my own. plus using the forums to pick up on other problems. Hopefully today maybe the day it gets airbourne.

            Fingers crossed!

                Yahooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Mi Trex 600 flys! well I run three tanks through hovering. (1st flights today after build) What a fab heli looks the bizz and is so much nicer to fly than the raptor (response wise). After my initial engine problems which turned out to be me in lack of experience and patience in the end. Being the first club member to bring a 600 N to the field every one was eger to see it fly, a good response was received in it's inital stages. Got it back today for some post flight checks all OK. Looking forward to Thursday for the next flight weather depending of course

                Busterboy if you read this

Set head speed up 1950 - 2000 now no wobble as you saw at the model shop just a tiny bit of wag on tail but easy sorted. Very happy with it in the air so far. will set the govenor up this weekend and start moving it around. And yes I think I made the right choice with the trex. I'd like to take you up on your offer of a blast in your airspace I might learn something else and be inspired to do a little more with it.

I changed the fan as well as you suggested on closer inspection the original fan was not flat? Good to meet you by the way....

Thank you to the guys who took time to pass on their advice in this thread.

A daft question to ask if I may...

Now I've sucessfully put 4 ltrs of fuel through my new baby and enjoyed every ltr of it so far. The daft question is... what should a trex 600 sound like with the engine running? I have the only trex nitro on the field (standard Nitro super pro with Align engine and exhaust) compared to the raptor with various exhausts ie zimmerman, TT 50 exhaust the Trex sounds loud and dare I say it rattly. I checked all alignments when building (have upgraded the fan) can't find anything wrong but just sounds different. Sounds OK in the air no unususal noises. I could be getting hung up over nothing but just thought I'd ask. Only thought I have is the main engine bearing but the engine is new...

My 600NSP also sounds loud and rattly, but I have nothing to compare with and no previous experience of nitros, and no one else here has a Trex 600N.

I also suffered hydrolocking when running in - probably due to my confusion over how far to have the needle out when running in, it was soooo rich that I had to apply the starter with the fuel line closed and the release the fuel once the motor was turning over! Now its had some running in I am gradually leaning out from 1 1/2 turns towards 1 turn.

                          Shaun.e,

Sounds like we've had similar experiences. Busterboy has PM'ed me advising the Align exhaust could have some bearing on my concerns. And has kindly offered the directions to his local flying spot to compare with other 600's. Unfortunately I'm working today and need to call at Fast Lads too. Looks like work may have to wait today.

                          Cheers

Thanks Shaun. Must be nice to have a local heli store! I just need to set up the Align Gov on the 600, tried yesterday but it closed the throttle!! I suspect that the Gov had forgotten the basic throttle setting after a long time in the hangar??

This Shaun/Shaun thing will just confuse Lee/Lee!!

                              They are loud !!

Best i can discribe is a metalic ZING. Especially with the Align muffler. deffo louder than a raptor cos its much stiffer.

best to have noise than silence.
