Upgrade 600e to 8 cells

Hi guys, I have PM'ed a few of you, but no one is lonine yet, I want to upgrade my 6 cell 600e to 8 cell. Info on ESC, batteries etc... would be gratefully received.

sorry if I forgot your name mate !!- Also forgot to mention Helinutz -these guys helped me in the past for 8s setups- I'am using a 120 main gear and 11T pinion/ motor is a 780kv Z-Power 800/ esc is a CC100 HV.... installed in a Quick sweet 16 v2 at the moment but soon to be transplanted in one of my spare 600's airframes....

Whatever you choose you won't regret the extra cells, it just makes everything work so much better. I know the packs are a little more expensive but I'd also think about 10s as well.

ESC, cchv85 would be a good starting point, the on-board gov is rubbish but I did get it to work OK with the Z-power, all the other motors just caused tail wag. If you've really deep pockets the kontronik Jive is superb, the Gov is just fantastic, runs real cool too just like the cc the jazz series runs too hot

Motors, stacks to choose from but I'd doubt you'll get better value from a scorpion 4025- 740 kv, Mikado do a suitable pinion 18T ( part no. 3018) that should give around 2200 -100% throttle.

The scopion motors are built a tad better than the Z-power so I'd go for that, Kontronik do a nice one (tango 45-08 ) real efficient, but just too much money, runs a tad hot as well!

You might need to mod the frame to get the wider can in but it's real easy and worth it.


Just to say I've just bedded in a couple of packs today- two 5s packs @ 3700 mh, the two delivered cost £162.00 ( cheaper than most 6s packs !!!) and there give a longer flightime too at 6min and at the end of a flight they don't even warm your hands

8S I'd definitely go with the Scorpion 4025-740kv. I use a 17T pinion on it.

Packs wise you need around 4000mah. I use 4200s and 3700s, Trev uses 4400s. His machine definitely has a bit more power than mine on the 4400s but it also flies a bit heavier. Depends on what you like, light and floaty or a bit heavier but a power monster.

ESC you can't get away with a Jazz as they thermal, so best bet is a Castle HV85. Also, do yourself a favour and run an external governor. The Revlock 20 works great or you can use the e-multigov. It gives you that bit more power that the ESC governor just can't deliver.

If you're stuck in the usual Trex 6s trap with lots of stuff, possibly including a charger, that will only work up to 6s, then you're going to have change quite a lot of stuff to get any real improvement. If you're buying a new ESC, motor, pack(s) and charger then personally I'd go for a 10s setup and not muck about with 8s.

I've been getting consistantly good results in any 600 size heli with 10s packs around 4aH and a Jazz55-32. Typically these give 9-10 mins of normal flight and mild 3D, and 6 mins of medium-hard 3D, for around 3Ah discharge. I can tictok a Logo14 for 6 mins solid on this size of pack. Of my seven Thunderpower 10s2p prolite packs dating from 2005, six are still going and one only recently puffed a cell. All have over 200 flights. I also have three Flightpower 10s 3700 Evo 25s with over 70 flights and no noticable loss, and one Thunderpower 3850 Extreme pack which gives good performance, but gets the balancer hot when charging at about 60 flights.
I've never had any issues with the Jazz (lower current on 10s than 8s). I have no experience of the newer Jive controllers, but they have beefier ratings than the Jazz. I have used the older Beat controller, but managed to overheat it learning TIctoks. Kontronic controllers are the best IMO. The Castle HV85 is a good cost compromise. It has a useable governor if you have the PC interface to set it up. There is some new, downloadable firmware for the Castle ESCs which some say gives a really good governor, but I've not yet tried it. I've also had good results from the Schulze Future 32-55, but they are expensive and the dip switch pack isn't very reliable. I've tried the Hacker/Jeti spin 77, but not had any real joy with it.

"For what it's worth, here's my experience of motors in a Trex 600:

Align 600L, Sort of OK, but strangely unsuited to the model; not powerful enough for 3Ders, but too high revving for gentle flyers. Does well in a Logo 10 on 5/6s.

Align 600XL, A thoroughly unpleasant motor. Avoid.

Z30A-1100, A small motor, more suited to Logo10/Swift size models, but it manages a very respectable performance in the Trex. Plenty of power for most aerobatics, but struggles a little with hardcore stuff. Excellent for those who want duration rather than brute power.

Orbit 25-08, Another small motor that manages a spirited performance. The one I had was spoiled by horribly screetchy bearings. Gets hotter and more expensive than the Z30A.

Neu 1515-2.5D, No personal experience of this one, but it seems to be the motor of choice for those determined to do hard 3D on a 6s pack. Expensive.

Neu 1515-2Y, Blistering power on 10s but headspeed needs to be 2200-2300rpm. For hardcore 3Ders only. Not very exiting on 8s.

Z50A-600, Great performance and very cool running, but needs 12s to really make it go. Went well on four 3s Mini Titan packs in series. Align frames need to be cut to fit. This motor is currently in my Xero G where it delivers over 20mins flightime from an 11s 8000 pack. There is also a Z50A-800 which should go well on 10s, but I haven't tried it.

Tango 45-08, A really nice 10s motor, but very expensive. Very cool running and the only non-cogging motor here, so no worries when the auto bearing seizes. As with the Z50, the Align frames need cutting.

Orbit 30-12, Another really nice 10s motor but a little screechy when unloaded. This is what I'm using at the moment.

There is also a Z50-1150 coming out. I'm willing to bet that this will be the one to get if you want to stick with 6s."


I think most of that still applies. I have since used the Z50-800 lots and it's rather dour on 8s, but fab on 10. Highly recommended. If you want all out power, the Neu 1912 is the most powerful I've used, but very pricy. I've no experience with Scorpion motors, but many people rave about them. Many people also seem to have bearing issues with them too.

If the thought of spending all that cash scares you, then you could try keeping your current 6s packs/charger ESC and buy a Logo500 to put them in. The Trex power setup works really well in the Logo although you have to change the motor.

Modifying the frames to fit in a new larger motor - one of you have suggested a brace, have any others fitted this? Or have you just made the 'space' larger?

you can make the space larger with virtually no detriment to the strength of the frames

Simon, photo as promised - you can see the area I cut out and also the frame support the doubles the frame thickness from the motor mount to the lower bearing block.



Another good tip, use the rubber form a Trex 600n fuel tank mounting to stop the motor wires rubbing on the frame and catching fire.
