  • 700 Clutch problem?

Today the starter will turn the engine over once then the engine stops turning but the starter is still turning? I thought the grub screws in the starter shaft (on the heli and starter) could have been lose, but they seem to be fine. What do you guys think? I did an emergency auto last time I flew.

Could I have damaged the one way bearing ?

After the auto I test started the engine to make sure it was fine. It started fine but made a slightly metalllic noise as it cranked over. I didn't think anything more about it till today. I remember robGT having a similar problem down the field, and Rob if you are listening, it sounded like yours ! I seem to remember mutterings of knackered cluches, but can't remember any more detail than that.

Don't have the heart to strip it down today. 700 one way bearings are stupid expensive, lets hope its not that!

      Hi Oliver,
      Always listening
It could be the one way in the clutch - i.e. not the main shaft one way bearing.
A new clutch (HN7039) comes fitted with a one way and is only £13... it could be that?
Mine was definitely a broken clutch.

      Cheers,

Thanks guys, I will order another clutch in anticipation.

Whats the best way to remove it rob. Go up (remove head, main gear, gov sensor) or down (undercarrige, basplate, and engine). Down's probably the best option, thinking about it. I presume with alot of swearing and slackening of frame bolts, it will slide out.

Rob any idea why yours failed?

Take skids and baseplate off - drop engine out.
          Replace clutch and refit stuff

          Deady easy process...

Not sure why mine failed. It hadn't over revved (to stress the clutch) so really dunno. It had done about 16 gallons when it failed - not the best longevity, but not terrible either.

          Cheers,

                LOL
                Thanks mate
I had about 5 weeks to get the 700 built and then get used to how it flew etc so I could compete with it at 3D Champs
It was definitely cutting it fine
And rather stupidly, I changed the cyclic servos just before the comp, which changed it all again
Then my header tank fell off (after staying on from new) - and the muffler came loose in another round!!
                Sheesh...
                Well done that man!
                LOL
                Cheers,

It had done about 16 gallons
                        ... just a little over 16 flights with a 90?

                        and the muffler came loose
Things are improving then! Better than the heli coming "a bit loose" from the rotor head like last year!

                            ROFL

What's this? Dig at Rob day or something
                            LOL

Last year, my engine had a tuning issue, somehow... in flight it felt like the clutch had gone or something as the power just didn't seem to be getting to the head and I had to land after almost binning it... doh!

That header tank (not standard kit item, my bad ) had stayed firmly put for 16 gallons - then all of a sudden, it falls off!!! WTF!

                            It's all experience
I don't mind looking an idiot, I've grown used ot it over the years
                            LOL

It's worth noting that the Trex700 needs a header tank to ensure it doesn't run lean. My experience there was that after about 1/3 of a tank, the clunk will start to pick up air and run the engine lean (crackles).

Fitting a header tank pretty much resolves that issue. The other way to do it might be to use a Fuel Magnet, or similar - as long as you can get it in the tank

                              Cheers,
