  • Has anyone else had a Align metal fan shatter

    Title says it all.....

I just had my third fan shatter mid flight...this time it punched a hole through the cooling case, broke part of the CF frame and blew the throttle linkage off...I managed to auto it down with no further damage thank god.

looking at the breaks in the fan, again its linked to 2 of the 4 mounting holes and checking the surface of the crack it looks like a metal fault. There's a grey section agaisnt the rest thats silver colour.

All fans were balanced and fitted with surgical care, each fan screw was tightened bit by bit as you would a cylinder head and thread locaked. Everything looked normal..so why the hell do they keep shattering???

Has anyone had anything like this happen or any ideas why?

    cheers

It scared the cr** out of me and the bit that blew out was super sonic..could have taken an eye out easy.

I'm going to press Align to sort this out because it cant be anything other than metal failure...and coz the frames shot its gonna cost an arm and leg. The wife already threatened me with divorce and removal of certain parts of my anatomy should I spend any more on these 'so called toys' lol

I've also never heard of this either. Is the fault with the hub itself maybe not machined true which is distorting the fan?

I considered that but i've had a new hub each time because the lugs shear. I honestly cant think of anything other than a flaw in the casting of the fan...I just dunno what to think....

Have you checked the crankshaft of the engine, if it is slightly bent, and i have heard of them before not being 100% true, it could be causing a high frequency vibration that shatters the fan. Just a idea.
Is the fan rubbing on the cover, another thing to check.

Hope this is a one off and you get the issue sorted quickly m8.
I've had the metal fan installed in mine for over a year!
The other guys that fly 600's at the feild also have it fitted.

Very odd,i have never heard of one shattering and to have 3 on the same heli and engine i assume tells me the problem is elsewhere.

did you have one magnet and a weight?

                  or just one magnet?
