My bird suffered a heavy landing and a tail rotor strike this evening after the hyper cut out whilst i was climbing out from an inverted hover!
I managed to flip it back upright and get it down (nose in) with what headspeed i had left.
Just before the impact i had arrested the rapid decent at about 1-2 feet off the deck and held the nose down to reduce the backwards drift that had developed during the emergency flip/decent. With the last of the useful rotor rpm, i successfully landed the model with a vertical speed equivilent to dropping it from about 1-2 feet (heavy landing). The impact then forced the tail fin to hit the ground and something became detached from the model. Anyway when i had a look at it; one of the tail blades had struck tail fin! Strange but i must of had a large rudder pitch demand when tail hit the ground as this would allow the blade to articulate and strike the boom or fin, luckily it hit the ground then the fin and my nice carbon boom is still fine. So my radix tail blades are dead. I'm going to use the align carbon blades next.
Nothing seems to be damaged so far. I'll fit new blades and spool it up to look for vibration. Just to be sure though i've ordered the usual bits, main shaft, spindle, tail shaft and spindle. The torque tube appears to be ok thankfully.
The Hyper was seriously hot and still smoking suggesting that it had gone lean and overheated causing the engine failure. I had recently had dramas tuning the engine so i thinking it had had it's day i ordered a new one yesterday! Shame i hadn't fitted it yet!
I'm not overly bothered about the whole incident as there is was minimal damage and i really did well to get it down so if anything its a good confidence boost as i'd yet to do an iverted auto with the 60on.
