  • Slow reflex

Ok, as I type this it's raining outside so real flying is off. BUT! I have Reflex. Trouble is, I am suffering with a tedious 20 - 30 frames per second which slows down even more when I fly near the pilot position or when the trees appear.

I'm thinking about a faster graphics card - is the radeon AGP X1600 ok? Does it make that much difference?
Is more RAM a better bet?

    My current PC spec is...
    Dell Dimension 8300
    P4 2.6 Ghz
    512 Mb ram
    Nvidia G-Force FX 5200 (AGP)

    Any PC experts out there?

    Regards,
    Cheers, Lee.

Hi Leebert, I think the video card maybe stuggling a tad as I assume it only has 64mb on-board memory, I would upgrade to a 128meg card and maybe bump your ram up some more. I'm running a 3ghz with an ATI radeon 550 128mb card which was about £45 and 1 gb system memory, Runs fine for the most part unless your using the big raptor 90. Also run it in fullscreen not windowed mode.

Cheapest video cards I have found are at www.overclockers.co.uk
    Velocity 50
    Synergy N5
    Fury 55 FBL
    Trex 700

Sorry, forgot to give card memory. It's 128Mb.
I tend to run Reflex in full screen mode at the lowest resolution. The scencery is on the lowest setting too and V-sync is off.

      What's the best way forward?

A new graphics card is never a bad thing but you don't need it. FX 5200 is fine for XTR. Get more system memory.

A graphics card gets extra memory from your system if it looks like running out and you have just 512 which will me maxed out on running XTR in the first place.

Switch to the 3d scenery rather than the panoramas. this will increase the speed a lot.

One other thing, make sure you haven't got anything else running in the background, CTRL + ALT + DELETE will bring up a system monitor which shows all applications that are running and there CPU & Memory usage. If you find something that shouldn't be there then right click on it and select 'disable process tree'.

goto simulation and un-tick the v-sync, I get about 190fps with this off.

                Hi Leebert
I run reflex on a Latitude laptop, with a basic ATI card and 516Mb ram all runs OK, I am surprised you are having problems with that PC, as Fixxer says, make sure something else isnt running in the backround.

                Cheers

                      Thanks for the help guys.

Andy_w - I assume Ade is refering to the Reflex scenery.

It doesn't appear to be slow in any other apps, just Reflex. I will try and "borrow" some additional RAM from work and see if the frame rate improves.

                      Cheers,

all sims are pretty heavy on the hardware. Have you got the latest drivers for your graphics card?

yes the reflex scenery is the one.

Failing that - buy my P4 Shuttle for £250, bags of ram, huge graphics card, DVD RW - got a DVB card too
