The devil is in the detail as ever

Rachel, since you are using an HDMI input, with your TV you need to make sure that your laptop is sending a signal in the HD TV range so in your case that would be 720p, 576p or 480p.

If you try sending a PC type signal such as 1024x768 over the HDMI cable the results will likely be poor or nothing at all as your TV does not officially support that format over HDMI.

Does your laptop have a VGA output?

If you can't set the laptop to send an HD TV signal then very often you'll get a better image over VGA than you are currently getting over HDMI.

The best VGA signal your TV can handle is 1280x768.

You also need to visit the 'PC Settings' menu on the TV and make sure that the 'Screen Format' option is set to 'Normal'. You can try 'Full1' but don't use 'Full2' as that will stretch the image to fit.

If you go the VGA route make sure your TV input is set to WXGA otherwise it'll try to squeeze the widescreen picture into a 4:3 frame and it'll look like it's lost horizontal hold.

That's why I was being careful about the exact TV model, some can take PC resolutions over HDMI with no problems, others are much more limited.

Even when the manual says something isn't supported, it will often work but just look bad which never helps.
