  • Practising Autos

This might be a case of running before you can walk but I've been practising auto's on the sim.

I found that they're a fair bit easier to do with the 90's, you get forever to 'hang' with the big blades. It took some time but I can sorta auto the little 500. Positioning isn't great so landing in front of myself is something I need to work on but ignoring that, the success rate isn't bad.

Anyone else got any auto recordings they want to share?

Practising autos is not a bad idea because you never know when you may need that particular skill. But it's not really very fun so often tends to get ignored. I know I should work on autos a bit but rarely do.

i know i need to practise them more, I've had 2 forced autos recently caused by engine/glow problems - both failed resulting in smashed helis

I pulled of a unexpected one the other day, saved a lot of damage with one of my 450s when the tail done the death spin.

        Landed without any damage.

I highly recommend sim practice from all different heights until you can land it every time no problem.

I also do it in real life every time I land, about a meter or two high.

I like to set the engine to randomly fail, that way just like the proverbial box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get, 9/10 times the rotter does it when I'm over water facing away and/or in a tight turn at low altitude D'oh. Apparently somebody told me the other night, and although I don't know a lot about rc helis yet I'm inclined to agreement, they are too easy on the sim. Heck I can land I reckon 4/5 attempts.

ive had 5 forced autos so far all landed with no damage, however I have to say when I try practicing I VERY ofter have to abort them, but then to be fair ive only recently started practicing them.
            All the best

auto's are one of my favourite things about heli flying. ive just got in to inverted autos flipping out at the end and love it. every flight is ended with about 4 or 5 autos

                Not bad Ant.
Before I stuck the 600 in I had begun to do autos with that as it has a longer hang time to play with.
I have only done a few mini-autos with the 500 for real since it doesn't stay up that long before the headspeed disappears.
Can't bring myself to do one from higher up.
Did once when I was forced to after the tail pitch control rod fell off and managed to get it down OK.

I like practising on the SIM but TBH, if it was for real, i'd just get it down and walk to get it rather then risk bringing it in close and risk running out of headspeed.
