I couldn't get FMS to run, and nothing I've got comes close to Phoenix anyhow.

yeh ... fms is good for practicing the stick movements .. but thats about it .. the heli's in it dont behave n e thing like the real thing .. so dont think ya can use that then fly ... it might sound like we preaching sometimes but you shuld listen to these members as some have been doing it a very long time and know the pitfalls to the hobby

Hunty - you mentioned you already had a controller - is this a heli/aero controller or one from a car?

I'm still very much a learner and can't overstate how good phoenix really is. Sadly, a crash with an RC heli can become expensive very quickly. If I remember correctly a nasty bump with a Twister like the one V70R has for sale could cost well over £20 to put right. That makes Phoenix worth 3 and a bit crashes. Getting on to the bigger models and the £70 would only cover the basics - add another £40 to £60 for blades and you can see that it's easy to spend well over £150 per crash.

I know it all looks very expensive just now, that's because in fairness it is. Before you spend anything (even on FMS) find your local heli club on www.bmfa.org.uk and go along with your dad. There you'll be able to speak face to face with folks who are already flying - it makes it a bit easier to swallow when you're being told this face to face. There's a world of difference between RC Cars and Helis (as many of us came into Heli's via cars just as you're doing) Heli's won't tolerate mistakes and can be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. Go along to a club, get chatting with those there and decide from there - yeah, they look cool on the videos and such but those pilots have years of practice and a sponsor to pay for their parts.

Where's the nearest mate? Mine's an hour's bus ride from me, but its' soooo worth it. And our very own Trillian on here goes by train with I believe a 50 or 60 class nitro. So don't upset her, a right hook from her would likely hurt...
