  • trainer skids for aero5ly5 (Mac) helis?

Is there a simple way to add trainer skids to an AeroFly 5 helicopter? I'm using v5.7.1.5 on my MacBook Pro (2.53GHz mid 2009 on OS X 10.8.3).

I've been loading the Augsburg scenery and the TREX 450 heli.

I'm guessing by trainer skids you are referring to training gear with the balls and sticks type setup that would be used on a physical RC heli. I have never seen this available within the Aerofly software nor have i ever seen it as an add on.
Why would you want to do this?
Training gear on a physical heli is used when first learning to hover so you don't hit the blades into the ground if the heli tips over too far, resulting in ££ in repair bills. As it isn't going to cost anything if you do this on the sim, so I don't see why you would need it.

      Hi Weirdfish,

Yes, I do mean the training gear with balls and sticks. I'm an absolute beginner, and I wanted to go through some training exercises with the balls and sticks attached whilst I get competent at just hovering. I was trying to fly on the simulator a TREX 450 which is same as the real hell I have bought, but I was finding that the simulator hell was tipping over even before I got off the ground.

Since these first attempts, I have found

      1) a larger hell on the simulator like the ECO 7 appears to be more stable
      2) I had my aileron trim on my transmitter set to a high value
      3) it helps to zoom in on the simulator to see what the rotor is doing.

I've been using the ECO 7 heli to practice and I don't seem to need the training gear on the simulator any more.

      Thanks for your response.
      best wishes,

It's a great simulator I've not had it long myself and still learning. Yes I agree with you about the Trex 450, it is very twitchy on the sim. You can set it up so you can use the DR & expo on the transmitter to tame it down a little or do as I have & basically try the different helis until you find one that closely matches the feel of yours.

If you want to tame the Trex 450 in Aerofly, try lowering the head speed by around 20%. The same applies to real life models. It is also a good idea to turn off the wind, or fly one of the indoor sites, just while you get used to it. You will learn quickest if you try and be disciplined, only using one model to learn on. I know it is tempting to try all the models out but they all have slightly different characteristics that can be confusing when you start out.

I agree with only sticking to one model, I do this too. Initially I tried them all and played around to see what the sim could do but then I quickly settled into a single model and fly it as if it were my real heli.
I didn't think about the head speed so thank you for that tip.
