  • Best sim for Mac?

Hi - I have a friend interested in getting a Sim for a Mac (for Heli and Planes).

Is Aerofly the best one to go for? I'm confused about the versions - there seems to be a page here aerofly5 that has a bunch of planes & helis - and 'updates' you can download - but no mention of how you buy it.

There is then a link to the Pro Delux site AeroFly Professional Deluxe Home which does have a price - but seems to be a slightly different product/version ?!

so what is the difference and which would be best?

    thanks all!

    J

I must admit, I didn't have a lot of luck with Pheonix on a Mac. I tried VMware fusion and parallels. It would sometimes work and then other times go out of sync with the controller commands.

If using a Mac I reckon the only way to do it is by using Boot camp. Then it becomes an expensive windows machine though!

            GtD,
Aerofly 5 is the newest version, professional deluxe is the older version. These can be purchased via the Ikarus site here: Shop England (£).
It is however expensive but if you have to buy a copy of Windows and Phoenix/Parallels/VM then the cost is not so bad. You will need to check computer specs to make sure it will run ok.

+1 for Heli-x, don't have it but a friend does - not sure how you set a tx up with it though.

Aerofly is the best all round Mac Native sim end of

if he wants to run windows and doesn't mind it then Pheonix is the next one

note: you can download extra stuff for Aerofly but it can be pain the resource for its a pain
also the reason its diffrent to PC cost wise they throw in extras if I recall....

If you don't want the hassle of installing different os and parallels I would recommend areofly 5. I went the Phoenix route as I had windows 7 and parallels already running on my mac.

Heli-x works well natively as it is written in java and works with any joypad too. I now run Phoenix under parallels as others said above... works really well for me. Just set the phoenix USB to always go to parallels and not had any problems with it.

What are the advantage of Parallels and VM Ware?

As a long term Mac user (25 years or more), I just don't see the point of running an application that runs a non-native OS inside it. Performance has got to be compromised on the sub-OS because the machine is running its own Mac OS, then an application and then the 2nd OS as well.

Use BootCamp and run Windows natively on the machine and get all the super performance that your hardware can deliver with ease. Mine runs Phoenix at full resolution and sampling rates etc with no bother at all.

Any arguments that say BootCamp is cumbersome to switch over to or 3rd party emulators allow switching are basically null and void in my opinion and just come down to laziness. Macs boot so fast compared to PCs that the restart is hardly a problem, apart from waiting for Windows to load when you switch that way, but that's not a Mac problem and presumably you still have to boot Windows in 3rd party software as well.

                        BootCamp and Phoenix - simples.

Bloody nora, Aerofly is how much!?!

I was going to pick it up until I saw that, it's obscenely expensive... Phoenix gives you free updates and new models, yet is less than half the price. They're clearly exploiting the fact that they don't have much competition on mac.

Guess I'll be sticking with Phoenix a while longer....

Agree 100% on this. Use bootcamp and run Phoenix that way. You would only need xp and I'm sure you could get a copy of that cheap these days.
This is the one and only reason I have windows on my mac to run Phoenix. I would have no use for windows otherwise. It's easy to do and works. Be nice if they did a mac version or even a version for my Xbox 360 would be nice.

That's about all I use it for nowadays.

I used to also use it for checking web pages in Internet Explorer and other PC web browsers, but even that isn't necessary anymore with Adobe's online checking service accessed through Dreamweaver.
