  • Riveting technique/s

Am doing research on creating riveting detail, That is riveting detail, not riveting detail, and wish to find out which is the most preferred by helicopter scale modellers. I say 'helicopter' modellers because on plastic models they create the effect of rivets by an imprinting method. On our stuff we need proper raised rivets.

Some, it appears, prefer the glue in the syringe method; I bought one of these kits but found that when the glue dots dried they became too flat. There are also the pre-formed rivet strips, but don't know how preferred they are.

There is also the marking of the rivet lines. Some, it seems, use a toothed wheel device for marking and then drop the glue dots on top of these. Others may use a rivet gauge and scriber.

So what is preferred and who does what please?

Thanks in advance for any helpful information.

        Riveting technique/s

I have applied rivets using very small plasticard discs, made using a punch for consistent diameter. I have a punch and die set that used to be sold by Historex Agents but I have just checked their website and they don't sell it anymore. An alternative is a short length of brass tube of appropriate diameter, sharpened at one end.

Depending on the surface the rivets are being applied to I either glue them directly prior to painting or wait until after priming and use polystyrene solvent to glue then to the primer. Once the top coat of paint is applied they are really secure.

You can also, if you fancy going utterly insane from tedium, use the option of small plastic rivets.

You would mark out the rivets as usual, then with a small drill you make a hole over each mark and pop in a rivet.

Alternatively, I have some of this stuff too but not tried it yet

            Re: Riveting technique/s

I know youre not keen on the glue & syringe method but this is what i did (on planks may i add) . I used Aliphatic Glue mixed with Micro Balloons this stops them collapsing & ending up with the flat top you experienced mate .

I recall someone on heliguy once who used an ordinary paper (file) punch to punch out card.. presumably could punch out thin plastic in the same way and ca.. also tedious (and depends on scale).

Many thanks, Rob, that's really helpful. Actually I think I would prefer the syringe method so your idea for stopping the blobs flattening is very welcome.

i only use gule ans needle way so easy and at plus it can make them big or small as u like.

i normally mix glue and micro ballon as said above.

                        Hi Rotaryone,all,
First post on here and discussing rivets, must say something.... All the above will get some good results but a variation on the theme by Zeeflyboy which I've used on some scale builds which granted is time consuming but yields nice results is to mark out your lines with pre marked tape, drill holes to whatever rivet diameter suits and bond in small lengths of styrene rod with water thin CA. Sand these down with 400 grit to the desired height and then dome off the surface with solvent cement. Takes time but the results are consistent.... Hope this may of help.
Time for a scale heli project this year. Apache 600 I think... Rivets, many.......
                        Andy.
