  • Is an Align 3g up to the job?

I know you flippy floppy gods would laugh at it but would an Align 3G be good enough for straight scale style flying? After all my futaba 401's have served me well and I'm sure non would recommend them for hard flippy floppy?

i would say yes,i flew 700e and 500 esp with 3g when it was first about, had a couple of issues with it but they were user error, once setup right i never had a problem with it,changed to v-bar following the flock, which is better, but 3g was fine for my flying at the time and probably still would be

after going from no-bar and the model flying very well
to the heli trying to kill me with a 3g inside it i'd never use one again
i find the skookum very good for scale use

            Hey.

As above really, in a word yes.
The main thing to watch for with the 3G is the connecting cable between the sensor and the main unit, it has been known to have intermittant contact on the odd occasion with disaterous results. I had one of mine throw a fit because of this lead, so I removed all the pins from the plugs and lightly squeezed them to make them grip the PCB pins better. No problems after doing this.

Otherwise a lot is known about the 3G now and so setting it up is a doddle. I'd normally suggest staying on V2.1 firmware, V3 was ok but I thought the cyclic performance degraded. However V3 did fix the tail kick issue that happened every now and then, so as you are planning to use this on a scale ship, you may not notice the cyclic's beeing less good but will the tail kicks.
So maybe upgrade it to V3 and fly.

May be worth looking for a 2nd hand 3GX - they really are going cheap these days. I got a BNIB one for £70 posted.

LOL! The whole point of the question was because I have one in a box Tom. why would it be worth looking for a 3Gx?

I agree the 3G is still a capable unit, even for 3d flying, just they haven't moved on as well as vbar and beastx have, for scale it would be a great choice

No, not selling mine - quite happy with them TBH . I suppose, based upon Coolice's response about potential loss of connection to the sensor, not sure I'd be comfortable flying a scale model if it's likely to throw a wobbly. I've always assumed scale models are quite pricey ... ?

For 60/70 quid - peace of mind ?

Once upon a time a flybar and GY401 was all flippy floppy had available unless there was big money spent, you can now buy full stabilisation with built in receiver for what a 401 cost 'back in the day', aren't advancements in technology great

I installed a 3G in a Vario benzine Hughes 300 with the 3 blade head but kept the GY401 on the tail just in case the tail kick issue resurfaced on the 3G total peace of mind and flies beautifully
