  • hirobo Lama new build

Hi everyone well here my next build :P
its a unflow hirobo Lama the engine not even been ran !!. i swapped this for my 550 at end of day i couldn't bring myself to buying £100 plus charger and £100 battery for 5 mins extra flight. so i made my mind up i going from battery to nitro powered for me it makes more sense money wise.but anyways back to the swap,my LHS offered this for my v1 flybared 550 plus £50 i jumped on it....no not the helicopter.

the new model it self i personally would call semi scale. apart from very basic cockpit and rather bland fake engine there is no details. the body is all plastic injetion molded very rough, there is holes in body for switches optional fuel filter the cockpit it self was even warped very bad quarity but i saw protential in this and as im a massive fan of scale over pod and boom i had no problems swaping.

So there few shots of helicopter once i got home

As you can see on this picture all these extra non scale holes and fixings, the pipe with metal tube that there the optional fuel filter go.... yuk

An rather burly shot of the nasty red plastic very yuk

and a even worse photo on tail yeah not much can say with that picture.

so my plan new color ? yes, new blades ? yes, hell rather lot of new stuff.

first thing first i also do a total rebuild on second hand/used helicopters and boy this one was one to prove right not one single blot/screw was locktighted not even clutch system to engine nor engine to mount i and just list every metal to metal fitting but u get idea.so started my rebuild even know it not been ran or flew i replaced the fuel piping both on the tank and to engine just for my own peace of mind. and the lost of fag smell was a plus.

my next step was the swash now yuo may or may not know the hirobo lama is based on the s-30 mean swash is a 90 degree macanitial swash ,now not a problem if i was keeping standard rotor but i not . my plan is to fit a sportsmoto 3 blade 600 size head to this helicopter. this lends me to a few problems one the 90 swash and not being ccpm ,luckly hirobo does a 120 ccpm conversion kit thats great apart from with this kit you are given a boom mounted rubber servo fitting. well the lama not got a boom lol. so my fix ? well was a very simple one in fact i moved rudder servo to place of where pitch servo was and used some of the now disused pitch links to make a rudder link set.

as you can see rudder now in place of old pitch location and the modifyed pitch arm

highlighted again diffent shot mods made with this setup i maintan full rubber movement without the need to modify the rudder push rod setup.

above is the nearly completed cockpit new paint and carpet the display panel will just be lite buy small leds nothing special i all so made some rudder pedels from pastic card to add to look. the lama did often be built with only one set of controls.

scale rivots and basecoat added to most parts of model now over top of white plastic primer sanded lightly with 1200 git . as u can see i desided to paint the full boom colored and not leave bare metal

this picture this same panel as one with switches etc but now all removed filled and rivoted also notice i added a panel fuel filler this panel is finished part from needing a clear coat that i get done the same place that paint my R22

final fitting and adjustments to make to this panel before rivots are added and base coat

not sure this picture shows the diffance much but the panel is ready for clear while i the tubes are "raw" plastic red inreal the tubes are much much more dull and plastic multi red

well thats it for now the cockpit is still in basic primer form i had to cut out some plastic and glue it back togeather to unwarp it it still need fillering sanded more cuz i not happen with it then i got add the nav light ports and a under belly ACL mount.

oh yeah almost forgot the tail is being replaced to with 3 blade quickuk optional extra i also be flying it with a beastx flybarless

well i update as i do more hope u all enjoyed read

A lick of paint and a few quid spent on the head and tail make a big difference!

      Here's one I built earlier ;=)

It looks awesome mate, but I cant understand why youd go from a mechanical swash to a 120 with the inherant interaction problems? Maybe thats just me. If it was me id fit th uprated collective arms off the sceadu evo.

But I cant detract its an epic looking bird!
Some say my left nipple is the shape of a Raptor canopy.......... And that for fun I chase sheep in wellies 3 sizes too big. All I know is I am 3D Clod

you can't buy a 90 degree 3 blade head anymore, they all 120 degrees these day so got use 120 degree

You can still get the three-blade swash to fit the mechanical mixer.

                        update time

                        there how she looks atm

here the new rotor head i not set links up or anything yet so inore the links at a massive angle

as to the real thing i crafted a tail light (white) the led is currently hidden under masking tape till after i get a clear coat put on

i bourt the last quick uk tail set they had in stock (i notice they not restocked in over 2 months)

atm i got trexx 500 tail blades on there but i will change them for something more scale at later time

i also spent little bit of time making the dumie engine looking better i repainted the cowlings and put some mess in the cowlings to hide the bolts and repainted the engine a nice brushed burnt metal color

there a shot of the bubble i had painted by "buckers"

Any 3-blade head will work as long as you have a swash with outside (fixed) links to match your mechanics. There are 3 inside (rotating) balls at 120 degrees to link upwards to your head plus one extra one to lock/phase the head. Lots of stuff out there as long as you have deep pockets and/or VERY understanding wife ;=)) Having said that, I found the easiest route was to buy the Hirobo 3-blade upgrade kit although the blades were rubbish. I ended up replacing them with a set of Spinblades black scale blades which (a) look great because they are nice and skinny and (b) are amazingly efficient. My Lama (converted to electric) weighs 4.4kg and draws just 27A in the hover with a headspeed of 1790 RPM

that bit in bold why better to go 120 degree from ground up much much cheaper. i might yet cut 10mm off top of shaft to lower head slightly as to me head setting bit high

                              Hi MAte,

I'm going the other way and converting one of these to electric ....

where did you get the CCPM conversion kit? I have a sports motor three blade head with CCPM swash that i want to use.

                              Cheers
