Trying to resurrect an old classic Morley

Just joined RC addicts and looking forward to having fun here

A friend of mine found a Morley Hughes 300 in a skip and thought I may be able to do something with it.

Its in poor shape, lots of crash damage - Although I am up for a challenge!

Can anyone out there shed some light on a Hirobo Shuttle head conversion that can be done?

I'm also thinking of converting to electric

Best bet is to check ebay for parts - usually quite a lot of Morley stuff going on there.
We've recently restored 2 Morley 47g models with pretty good success - but the problematic parts are the plastic canopies as these are few and far between now. Luckily we had some that were relatively intact, but the rest of the model was a mess.

In fact - a 3 blades Morley hughes 300 head on there now at 99p... long time to go though.

Thanks for the advice - The 3 blade head on eBay looks a little worse for wear (although better condition than mine!)

I have heard of a Shuttle Conversion - the good thing about that is there are more Shuttles around than the Hughes.

I have some great flying at the moment with my Trex 450 pro V2 and Blade 130x - My friend found the Morley in a skip! along with the starter, radio etc etc. The NiCads were shot, so stuck a Rx Lipo in and realised it had a mechanical giro! Great old vintage stuff!

Would like to hear more about your 47g (there is one on eBay)

to use the shuttle head you need from the swash upwards from the shuttle
plus an 8mm mainshaft
you can shorten the shuttle shaft and re-drill the fixing bolt if needed to
you will need to either ream out the morley top mainshaft bush and drill out the lower shaft fixing
some have an auto hub most don't as it was an optional part that failed often and locked up
or
make a new top bearing holder and use two shuttle bearings
and turn down/grind the lower part of the shaft to fit the morley coupling (or make a new cupling of the correct size

if needed the shuttle shaft can be shortend and the bolt hole re-drilled

the electric conversion is just a case of making a mount (i used some ali angle)
and a prop adaptor with the morley pulley
you keep the clutch or you can lock the clutch up

That is a great help. If there are any photo's or drawings to help this along that would be great.

The heli was found in a skip with the Futaba 35mhz Tx. It had not been used for a while (and quite severely crash damaged) so I put a Lipo rx battery in the Futaba Rx and heard the mechanical Gyro start up - Brilliant!

I think I will use my Spektrum 6210 rx and Align Gp790 recently taken out of my Trex 450 pro v2 (just converted to FBL) as it will probably run a lot smoother!

Would it be better to use the original futaba servos? (they are huge and analogue) - And with regards to going electric, what size motor would be best?

The Morley is a mark 1 I think as it has the plastic boom, the torque tube is bent (along with the tail pitch control) are these easy to straighten? or best get replacements... From where?

i used a century swift motor, i can't remember the kv

the drawings i made was sent to a chap in france but were sadly lost in the post
the tail pitch control is made from piano wire so can be replaced with a new one, the wire going through the tail output shaft is just bent to 90 deg
the tail drive on the 47's was piano wire and i used a graupner wire from Martin Briggs Models in Ledbury
the only place for any new body work is Leamington Hobby Centre with the easy scale 300 body set as it is a Morley moulding
the rest of the morley spares are either ebay or the bmfa
i have sold my morley bell 47's and the remaining spares was given to a lad in the midland helicopter club

and i'd replace the old servos, they don't need to be anything fast or powerful

I have seen on ebay - this swash and main shaft:

With regards to modern servos, would you have a recommendation?

Bit of a long shot here....
I have a Morley Hughes 300 that I am restoring.

I have everything sorted apart from the flybar :-(
Looks like a 4mm steel rod will do the trick, but I have no idea how long the dimensions of the original bar was.
There is no data in any of the manuals that I have found.

Does anyone know how long it should be ??

I no longer have any Morley helicopters but if I remember correctly the flybar is about the same length as a shuttle
which is approx 550mm long
