  • Align AH-1 Super Cobra build thread

So, this is my first ever foray into scale-esque helis and I thought I'd do a little build log to go with it.

I'm not so interested in having an absolutely 100% faithful scale model - I have neither the time nor patience, nor I suspect the necessary skill - but I do want something that looks badass and somewhat like a real heli to provide something different to my pod and booms.

The Align AH-1 seemed to fit the bill, so I swapped my protos for a T-Rex 500 ESP with a chap on here and chucked it in the cupboard until I had some cash to spare on the fuselage.

Finally picked up a "seconds" from raj at align-trex with some barely visible surface scratches for a nice discount! Sent it out to Geneva and today it arrived, so here starts the build! It'll be a little while before the thing is airborne, I have some extra mods I want to do such as pilots, navigation lights, weathering on the paint job etc and eventually I may go for a 4 blade head (AH-1Z style) and a new paint job but for now I will be leaving it mostly as is.

    So, "The beginning"

The box it arrived in is massive, the fuselage is actually quite big - length wise it's actually the same as my 600 Pro, and with the wing stubs fitted a fair bit wider too. Should make for quite a nice presence in the air!

The box - with mCP X on top for scale lol.

    IMG_8147.jpg

And the contents (minus the frames and TT extension, I had already taken these with me in my hand luggage and already fitted them awaiting the fuselage... I'm an impatient sort lol)

    IMG_8154.jpg

And here a close up of the incredibly detailed cockpit... I intend to install some small green floodlighting here, with a tiny green led to light up the heads up display.

    IMG_8149.jpg

So I set about putting the fuselage together, there's not a lot to do here - just install the landing gear, pop the magnetically fastened gun on, stick a couple of antennas here and there, and then glue the wing stubs on with associated weapons and apply some waterside decals.

I say "just install the landing gear" but here is where I hit my first snag. There are 4 nuts inset into the bottom plate where you have to pass the screws through the landing gear and then fasten them into the plate. The front right nut was full of epoxy or similar and I couldn't get the screw in. I tried to drill out just the epoxy, but no dice! in the end I had to drill out the whole nut, and insert a new one with some epoxy to hold it in place. This now doesn't have the upper side of the base plate to stop it being ripped free, but i hope the remaining 3 combined with the epoxy holding the nut in are good enough to take a few heavy touchdowns, not that I intend to do any!

That finally sorted the rest was very straightforward and you can see the assembled fuselage (minus decals) here with my 600 Pro for a backdrop as an example of scale - as you can see this is a long fuselage for a 500!

    IMG_8156.jpg

Quality wise I've been quite impressed so far (notwithstanding my gear install issue) - the fuse appears well made and the paint is nicely done. It's solid, but quite heavy - it's certainly going to put a lot of load on the heli, but I have plans for that

I'll add more posts as I go, keep checking back if you are interested!

    The guts

So, here's the built up frame.... the kit comes with these new side frames that position the tail at the bottom, and it’s a simple case of swapping all your old bits over to the new frames. I will be using additional supports where the old battery mount was to keep frame stiffness, but allow easy access to motor for oiling etc.

    IMG_8219.jpg

Servo wise I'm running 3x MKS DS9660A+ on cyclic, and for now an Align DS520 on the tail. FBL controller is a Skookum SK720 and for power, I decided that I didn't want a scale heli with screaming high head speed, but the extra weight of this fuselage means I want/need power! So... I picked up a BIG second hand Scorpion 4020-1100, a motor that would be more at home in a 550 sized chopper - but then like I said, this thing is as big as my 600 so perhaps I'm not crazy. Calculations show with a 15T pinion I'll get a comfortable 1900 or so headspeed on 6S, with 16 and 17t pinions available if more head speed is needed.

    IMG_8220.jpg

To get this to fit I had to just work the frames slightly at the top with a dremel, but it didn't need much taking off... If you don't want to take anything off the frame, you can use a KDE motor mount which drops things down slightly.

I'll be swinging 4x435mm (vs stock 425mm) scale blades... This should help lighten the disc loading, and improve the efficiency by using a lower head speed... plus 4 blade heads are just cool. The AH-1Z has a 4 blade head so it's not a total scale disaster either.... I will be painting the blade grips flat black when I get a chance.

    IMG_8221.jpg

To power the motor, I have shoe-horned in a Castle ICE 100A I had lying around unused, and as you can see from the test fitting pics I just had to trim the fuselage and canopy slightly to get things to slot in easily. The manual calls for it to be mounted at the front left, but I moved it further back to keep it away from my FBL controller and also to help with CG since I'll be adding nose weight in the form of pilots (plus a heavier motor!).

    IMG_8224.jpg

This is the assembled tail section, all the parts you need to adapt the original TT tail are included and assembly is straight forward following the instructions. The linkage for the pushrod is nicely done and it all operates very smoothly with no slop evident... the small angled transmission gears look a bit fragile, but a spare set is included and with the tail in it's new elevated position, tail strikes would mean you have bigger problems!

    IMG_8223.jpg

To complement the new lower head speed, I will be running 75mm blades instead of the stock 70mm, hopefully they will generate enough thrust to make up for the lower speed. Eventually I will add a 4 blade tail but to keep costs down I will just be flying a 2 blade for now.

The manual calls for the flybarless unit/gyro to be installed on the receiver plate at the back, but this would mean removing the whole mechanics every time I want to adjust something on the Skookum! This isn't my idea of fun, so I’ve cut down a battery plate and made a tray at the front where I can mount my skookum and still have access with the field programmer/usb lead.

    IMG_8225.jpg

Here is the main frame sat inside the fuse for a test fit. Lots of room at the bottom front for a lipo, the packs you see are two (count em, two!!) 6S 2650mah TP packs, you could fit anything up to around 120mm in length but not more unless you angle it. Plenty of room in both width and height so it’s only length you need to worry about. So much room you could even run two of these packs in parallel as 1 6S 5300mah if you wished – will have to see later what the CG is and whether that would be possible. Either way it could be a good solution to run a dual 2000mah for example to effectively get a single 4000mah that fits nicely.

    IMG_8230.jpg IMG_8233.jpg

And a small update - here are the scale blades fitted to the mechanics.

Yeah it's a great price... I keep changing my mind and can't decide whether to go with the 2 blade head (more faithful to scale) or the 4 blade head which would look cooler IMO lol.

Also to go 2 blade will cost me about 50 quid for a set of blades, to go 4 blade will cost more like £150 for the 4 blade set plus head... More if I go 4 blade on the tail too.

Cheers, I'm not convinced by those scale blades though - if rather have something that looked a bit worse but flew better lol!

The spin 435mm multi blade set with a coat of black krylon paint should look good and fly great. Does everyone think I should go 4 blade then? The scale fanatics would have a fit I'm sure lol.... There is a 4 blade variant but that has a few differences.

4 blade heads sure look cool though!

Made some progress on the lighting today, hopefully get some pics up tomorrow... I think I'll post small updates as I go then sum them all up in the posts above.

Edit - ahhh yah bugger. 4 blade head ordered lol. I'll stick with 2 blades on the tail just for now but will upgrade that next month I think.

                            So, mini update...

Check out the vid for my lighting mods

Align AH-1 Cobra Lighting - YouTube

It's a pretty basic kit, and while I like the idea I don't like the implementation... I want strobes that are brighter and double flash for a better effect, plus some brighter red LEDs for beacon and nav.

I also might put a ridiculously powerful lighting unit in the front as a search light inside the front pod. Again sorry scalers but I think it'd look pretty cool.... I'm going to try and do it in a way that doesn't spoil the scale appearance in general, at least not when switched off!

Found what I'm going to be using for it at nightrc.com so will update when the new kits in!

                              Another little update!

Got my incredibly rare pilots in the post today, and obviously as you do with expensive and rare things I set about carving them up with a dremel and heating them up with a blow torch to bend them into place....

Here are the results - much better than an empty cockpit imo! What do you guys think?

I cut them at the waist so they would fit, and then hollowed them out a bit with the dremel to lose some weight.... they don't have any legs (I can't really see a way to make them work with legs at the mo) but you can't actually really notice when looking at them installed.

It's very hard to get decent pics of them inside the canopy but I tried my best!

For those interested, they are McFarlane Helicopter crew chief models, but have been out of production for a while now and are incredibly hard to find. I got lucky and found a guy selling some on rcgroups, but they don't come cheap! when I bought mine he had one pair left but they may have gone by now.
