  • Scale set up for flying?

I have just got My £50 Concept srx MD500 up and running. But I am wondering if you set a scale heli different to say my raptor 30 etc.
Would you zero at mid stick or 5 degrees.
ie pitch and throttle curves any ideas on a few set ups at the moment I have liner set up.

scale is all about smooth flying. I setup all my pitch curves with +5 at mid stick, but it is entirely up to the pilot and what he feels comfortable with. The same goes for D/R and Expo. As scale flying tends to be a little "lazy" compared to aerobatics, changing the HS, D/R and adding expo will make the model less responsive, but still fully controllable. For example, on my MD500, I used a D/R of 50% and Expo of 30% on Ail and elev with a HS of around 1450rpm. This meant I could fly the model with fairly big stick movements, but have it fly smoothly.

You need to experiment with setups for find one that suits your style and make the model look real in the sky.

I have never used D/R on anything what's best way of setting this up? When you set up +5 at mid stick are you doing this with pitch curve?
At the moment the spec on the MD the servos are old JR517 which I think I will have to change as the feel very slow.
I wont to get it nice smooth so any help would be great.
      Thanks

Okay unlike the 3D machines most scalers go for +5 at mid stick and yes done with the pitch curve

D/R limits the amount of movement so instead of giving 100% D/R can say 80% movement for the servo.

Expo is also good aim around 20% to 30% and only on ailerons and elevator.

Rudder/Gyro slow the gyros piro rate down as well if you can so its slower in the turns the real ones don't bang the tails around so you don't want to either.

          D/R is set in the Tx and is used to change the amount of travel on the servo. For example;

The default travel setting on most transmitters is 100%/100%. If you get the amount of movement you need out of the servo without any mechanical binding, this can be left at 100%.
If you now want to change the amount of travel for individual flight modes, normal, idle1, idle2, this can be set in the D/R or dual rate menu on the Tx.

Exponential or Expo, is usually coupled in the same menu as D/R and is used to either soften or inhance the servo response around the middle stick position.

To start with, leave the D/R and Expo at the default setting and fly the model. If you feel the control inputs are fine but a bit too responsive, leave the D/R as it is and change the Expo to soften the response. You need to fly the model and see how it behaves in the sky, the adjust the settings to suit. Remember that the helicopter will fly differently with a fus compared to pod and boom.

The +5 is setup on the pitch curve. Adjust the throttle curve to give you a headspeed in the region of 1450 rpm.

The 517 is spec'd at 2.9kg of torque, so is probably a little weak. It is designed for models up to 30 size only. I am not familiar with the Concept. If the swashplate control is eCCPM, then the 517 will be fine for gently flying which is what scale is all about. However, if you are concerned, then look at something such as the S3152 which has 3.9kg of torque and is the servo I used in my 50 size MD500.
