  • SUPER AIRWOLF 500 size building

On almost every heli site ive post this thread
But I want to share this building with everyone who is interested .
Its a project I started with in may 2009. Its not complete finished yet but it will be shortly.

The building Ive compressed with all building parts in it, because the original threat is 60 pages. So dont be surprised to notice jumps in time with this thread
Ill hope you guys will enjoy the thread
Its a airwolf size 500 with the following extras on it:
    • Window wipers
    • Tinted windows
    • Real turbo ducted fans with after burner effect
    • Custom made turbine pipes
    • CNC retractable landing gear
    • landing lights
    • Nav lights
    • REAL green lasers on the sides
    • Cam system
    • Fully lightened custom made cockpit
    • Antennas
    • Flybarless system Beast X and i2 fbl head
    • Several details
    • Scorpion engine upgrade
    • Servo upgrades
    • A lot of wiring, Ubecs, voltregulators, Lipo alarms, Switches and connectors
    • and much more

Heres is the plan ive made:

        progress 1 of 20

        Yes, I mean "thread"

I have bought an airwolf fuselage for my trex 500 ESP.
The original version of the fuselage i dont like so much. So I am making an special equiped airwolf.

I painted the fuselage in a deeper black color but not to shiny.
The black-white edges I must finish to make a nicer seperation(You always have a little paint dust)

The airintakes on the sides are open on the original fuselage so you can see all what build inside the bird. I dont like this so I decided to close this up with metal speakercovermaterial.

        ROCKET LAUNCHER:
The original rocket launcer is made of plastic and very poor paintjob.

ETRACTS: The retracts are made of wood so easy to brake. They also dont have suspension.
So I ordered these special retracts (see below).

WINDOWS: the windows are transparant so you can look inside to see the batterypack. Not good!
So I covered the windows with special printed blue foil. Also the side windows are covered with transparant plastic with blue foil.

        LIGHTING:
The landing lights are installed and only work when the retracts are down.

        EXTRA TRUST ENGINES:

Inside the body I install 2 ducted fans with
excaust pipe that give the airwolf more ahead trust

        EXTRAS
The real aiwolf have window wipers so mine too.

The antennes on the body I still have to make those.

        DUCTED FANS:
Ive received the ducted fans for the extra thrust.
The plan is to mount these in the left and right 'wing' of the airwolf.(next to the landing gear). With a flexible pipe (with inside a small slit to make a strong air-pressure) that lead to the rear of the wings to the excaust pipes. These pipes will also be custom made aluminium pipes. An 20 Amps speedcontroller ill be mounted with also a extra 2 cell lipo battery for the power and also for power of the landinglights

            progress 3 of 20 COCKPIT

ve made an detailed cockpit and printed on transparent special foil(backlit paper) for in the airwolf.
The idea is to make the seats and 'dashboard' from 1 piece balsawood. Its light and perfectly workable.
The print Ive made will be placed on the wooden shape. Its must be perfect fitt.
In the balsawood there I place 2 led lights with plexiglass. With a knife I scratch the global shapes of the different items to lighten up the different cockpit board items. (Or I use an other lamptype)

Here are two photo's. without light and the effect with light.(not the exact way but you ll get the picture)

Ive made the whole cockpit allmost complete with seats, centercontrolboard, main dashboard with the lighting inside. All made off balsawood and plexiglas parts. I created a blue lighteffect with two LED lightstrips. One behind the main board, other under the centerboard.I still need to adjust the cockpit a little to make a perfect fit into the fuse. Also the several details as cyclic stick and different items I have to make. But the main thing is complete now.

Ive seen A building threat of a guy here that builds a airwolf big size with a super detailed cockpit with moving display.
But thats I thought 600 or 700 size.

So heres the deal for my project:
I am making it for my 500 size airwolf
I am adjusting the cockpit now. I will use this item:

These are 1,1 " photoframe displays and allows to use 180 photofiles.
            jpg and GIF.
So I could use it for a animated Radarscreen
            This one:

Ive finished the cockpit now with the moving display.
Its a 1,2 inch display from a photo frame pocket size.
The only thing that I didnt think off was that this display DONT accept animated Gifs!

So I had to improvise with the slide show function (mimimum 1 second), so I added some jpegs an set it so that it would like lik a animation.

But at the end it turned out great. Only thing I need to do is finish up the cockpit a little nicer with new paint and get rid off the wooden left overs.
Here a few pictures of it:

Ive made the cokpit complete now. include cyclic and pedales
I painted the whole cockpit again in black.
And I changed the foil underneeth the dasboard into a bit more blue one.
            Here the photo's:

Progress 4 of 20 Lighting, retracts and wiring

Some pictures of the wiring of the NAV lighting

The next pictures are landing lights:

Also the installlation of the retracts:
They are from smartmodel and are great

Problem is that this retracts are 3 mm larger then the original retracts so I had to make the wheelsockets bigger. But that worked out well.
See below the progress. The connection with each other i still have to make because there will be a switch mounted on the rods for making the landinglights work. But thats later on. Im glad that the retracts are mounted and that they fitt perfectly now

Progress 6 of 20 Detailes and first total view

                    A few detailes:

Ive made the fuelintake (look a like), other excaustpipes, rubber strips on the wheelholes for a nicer finishing. I had to file the front wheelcase to fit the retracts.
I also added some windowwipers on the windows.

                    The taillight is installed.
And a few shots how the look for now with the cockpit

                      Progress 7 of 20

Ive made the switch on the retractsservo to activate the landinglights. An extra servo arm mounted on the retractservo arm to press the switch when the landingear is going down. It works perfectly

                        Progress 8 of 20 Antennas

Ive use a minicam that I can mount verywhere I like on the wolf.
It works with a 9 vol battery and sending the signal to a receiverbox on my television /dvd recorder. So that I can record in flight.
The cam uses a antenna. And that antenna I connencted with 2 antenna on the nose of the wolf
                        here the pics:

Below is the image you get with the cam mounted as below. (not mounted exact the way it should be but you ll get the picture..
BTW this is an old picture with the cockpit without the moving display:

This bird is gonna be Flybarless (of course)

So I orderd this head: i2 head. Great head!

Progress 10 of 20 Motor change and tail fin

the new motor is installed and tested. I have mounted the landing skids on temperaraly. The new motor sounds very impressive and more power then the stock one.
the difference with the stock is impressive. Also the size of it. Its smaller but more power. The scorpion HK3026 1600 kv

Also Ive changed the stock tailfin into a custom make one:

Progress 11 of 20 Ducted fan turbos

My favorite part of the build
                              The ducted fan turbo fans.
                              Heres the plan:

2x 12 mm brushless motors, 2 separate speedcontrollers to control the motors.
Speed is max 36,000 RPM on 2s lipo so its enough to get a great sound

ive decided to make an extra little thing on the fan system.
When a real turbine engine is running you can see the flames of the fuel injection in the pipe.(afterburner effect)

                              So.....why not I thought.....

Ive connected 2 red led lights on the channel that feed the fans.
With a small extra speedcontroller (minisize) Ive created the illusion that there are real fuelinjection flames in the pipes.

At lowest stick when the fans are off the 'flames' are also off
The more power I give to the fans the more 'flames' (red light) you ll see.

I disconnected the fans controllers for this little job because I still have to weld the wiring
So on the pictures below the fans are not running.
When the job is complete the fans will be running..with sound....and....'flames'
