JR Schweizer 300 'Build Thread'

Following a question re. a new build, I am now running a build thread for my new project - a JR SCHWEIZER 300.

The mechanics are JR 60 Venture, the 'Kit' is the JR Schweizer (Hughes) 300 and she'll be powered by an OS 70 SZ.

Everything is 'Brand Spanking New' and here's what she currently looks like!!

Here's this evening's efforts. I've an empty Bag No: 1. As you can see I've photographed each step before and after. Will try to do his all the way along unless you think it's too much? Some shot's are also better than others - Apologies.

I have to say that my expectations of JR hardware have not disappointed!! The parts in this kit, and it's of quite an age now, are engineered to perfection

I have the feeling his will be a really pleasurable and most rewarding build.

Managed to spend some time on the 'Upper' body.

The Main Bearing Blocks are Loctite fixed whilst the Clutch and Rear Belt assemblies await meshing etc.

The Main Shaft was used to align the Main Blocks in the frame and slides freely.

Again, the quality is superb!!

Here's the lower body build. Nothing special here. Nice and straight forward. Looks like a Duck Billed JR !!

Time for the skids.

First the lower rail needs replacing with a nice shiny one from the 300 Kit. It's longer than the standard and extends out with an additional brace.

The canopy mounts are larger than I've ever seen before and as for the skids themselves.......!!!

I've included the standard skids in the picture for comparison.

I think the last picture here will give you an idea of their size. This is a loose fit so off now to install a few bolts and grub screws

Had a chance to pop the engine in the body, sort the main gear meshing and mount everything on the skids.

The main shaft in the 300 kit is longer that the standard so this has gone straight in. The standard shaft joins the standard skids and the standard canopy in the 'New & Unused' box!

The last time I saw a set of these was a couple of weeks ago at Center Parcs when the kids were Kayaking

If you recall above, I mentioned the 300 kit came with a longer main shaft. I assume this is too allow for the height of the canopy. I wondered how much this was going to affect the rod lengths. Well, it goes further than this

If you look closely at the middle picture in the above post, you'll see the washout hub now falls below the pin

However, JR have covered this in the 300 kit with a second lock ring and pin. Just remove the first pin from the main hub, install the second lock ring and 'Robert is your mother's brother'. They have even included a longer set of rods

Well, she's starting to look like a heli now. I've fitted some big shiny yellow parts on the boom (with the assistance of my 'Dremmel') and mounted the boom to the body. No surprises during this phase Just need to build and install the tail rotor and it's time for the electronics

OK, apart from the linkage rods (that I install along with the electronics), that's the end of the mechanical build.

I will look at the canopy soon enough but seeing as it's flying weather, I'm off flying

The avionics are all in and I've found some time time to sort the 'hood'. What with work, a couple of heli upgrades and a glider build, it's been difficult to get this finished. Anyhow, I'm keen to get her in the air so now this is sorted, all I need to do is to fit the 'hood' to the frame and she should be good for her maiden

D-Day!!

Having come to the end of some building work indoors and having checked the weather last night, I though it was a good day today for a maiden.

The forecast was for 10mph winds with 12mph gusts so I loaded the '300' in the car and set off for the field. The truth was that the wind was double the forecasts (Wind meter was showing 22mph ). However, I took a few deep breaths and the attached pictures show the results.

She flew without any trim adjustments and I was able to run about 6 tanks on the slightly rich side to enable a gentle 'break in'. Job done
