  • Thunder tiger rappy 50 /MD530

    Hello,
I recently swapped an electric 500 size scale heli for raptor 50 with a nice MD530 body on it,thought about giving it a clean. checkover and then flogging it on.Today i made the big mistake of flying it and i think i may want to keep it,its fitted with an OS50 hyper and matching pipe that exits out of the rear<not too noisy> and keeps alot of the crap away, standard futaba bb servos but for some reason has a blingy bright blue quick uk head .For a 50 size heli its rather big but is very sprightly and does aeros with ease after some subtle weathering and a few added extras and maybe an electric conversion ??? it may become a keeper,
    cheers Euan.
ps anything to look for on the rappy that is prone to failure?

Not too much to go wrong on them usually. The things to keep an eye on are the pin that holds the tailrotor pulley on and if it is the original ali tail hub which uses the two long grub screws, these have been known to shear off due to overtightening of the lock nuts that hold the grips on. But if they are assembled correctly, locktited in the hub etc. and not over tightened, they can work fine for years. The plastic pitch sliders can split.

Otherwise it's pretty much the usual things to keep tightened, oiled etc.

Also check that the tail blade grips have the thrust bearings otherwise it can be graunchy and problematic. Personally I'd fit the Quick UK tail grips but only if you plan on keeping it I love my raptor!

I put an Ely.Q tail casing on my Raptor because I like being able to see the pulley. I have the ali pitch slider and steel hub but so far the stock grips have been fine. Since I retired the Raptor 30 from service I am contemplating moving all the blingy stuff onto the Raptor 50, including metal tail grips and casing etc. but we shall see.

Yeah I had the stock tails on both my Raptors and actually never had a problem. I changed to the metal pitch slider after I split the one on the Ely.Q and decided to just do them both but I imagine mine get jostled around a bit more than usual due to being carried by hand to the field to fly and I wanted them just that bit more sturdy.

              Hello,
I have just been out and gave the MD530 a good thrashing, you can really throw it around <very unscale> it flies very well and has bags of power from the OS> I had a dead stick and with luck on my side it auto,s very well.I need to invest in a new plug?? i am surprised that the engine isn,t fitted with a three needle carb as mid range is a little vague. My friend took some photos on his posh camera so i will try and upload them,
              cheers Euan.
