  • Roban Airwolf 800 size build

So... I thought i'd treat myself as an early xmas pres from Quick UK.

Thought i'd start this thread as there are not that many around of this bird.

    First impressions... It's big!

Very good quality fuse, mechanics seem sturdy

Boxes are well packed, with all relevant bits kept together.

Couldn't resist a quick put together to get an idea of it's size...

First job is to figure out the interior lights. Not much in the instructions, but not hard to figure out.

One word about the instructions, they are written OK, but the pictures lack clarity as it just a naff black and white printout. There is a colour PDF on the Roban website, so am using that on my iPad instead. Much easier!

Just a quick test of the instrument panel lights. Pretty cool. There are also lights in the cockpit roof and centre console.

So Navigation lights, interior lights and cockpit are done. Downside of these kits is that no pilots are supplied. Something to search for while I continue with the rest of the build.

Ha, thanks. Took me a lot of deliberating before purchasing!

So, windscreen wipers fitted. Flippin fiddly tho, and managed to snap one at the base. After a generous amount of epoxy, they seem pretty secure.

So, onto the mechanics. First job is to secure the head to the main shaft. Just to be thorough, took the head apart to check the thrust bearing. Not a whole lotta grease on there, so re-greased and refitted.

So servos are in. Using Align DS615s for the head. Using the supplied plastic arms for now, bit plan to use metal arms eventually.

Head is roughly 90'd up until I get my electronics.

Next is to mount the motor. I'm using the recommended Align 750MX, which has the correct length shaft and drops right in. Just need to file a couple of flats for the pinion and that's it.

The side frames need to come off for this, so a good opportunity to re-grease the metal gears and apply locktite where necessary.

The motor is on a nifty tray that allows you to adjust the main belt.

So now i'm unsure what to do about powering the beasty.

I'll be using 2 6s lipos in series for the main power. But ideally a separate 2s flight pack for the receiver and servos.

Not having put together something this big before, anyone have a recommended wiring diagram?

I was looking at the New Castle Talon 120HV as it has an integrated BEC, but for peace of mind i'd like to keep the BEC separate.

So i'm thinking I should get a Castle Edge 120HV ESC with a separate Castle BEC. Does this sound right?

when i built a 600 size airwolf i used evel knievel 7inches tall so that may do the job, best if you can get them with the helmet, i just unpicked the stars off and soaked the uniform in grey model paint. have a look on ebay, i paid £6

This is looking very nice indeed, I'm jealous already. I'd love one of these, but haven't got the time to build one. With the power side of things, why not use the 120 with the bec for ease and an opti back up guard which are easy to install and only £20-£30, just make the "Y" lead for the stick pack, install opti BUG and hey presto!! Where did you buy the kit from? Have you got a link?

Chatting to Budd at Quick about ESCs some time back, I recall him mentioning that Castle ESCs are popular for scale because of the soft start ...
