  • Trex 450 5 Bladed Head Conversion - ESC Question

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1373309004.641957.jpg

So a few years back I purchased the MD500 fuz to put an old Trex 450 into... It flew fine on the 2 bladed fly barred head but never really looked that impressive.

Recently I stumbled across a 5 bladed conversion so I thought I'd give it a go. The head appears to fit perfectly and along with some cheap Align 3G blades (I plan to spray these at some point later on to a more realistic colour!) she hops up into a hover as happy as can be.

Now after 1 min of flying the ESC cuts in and forces you to land, it's mega hot so I'm guessing the additional blades are pulling more amps and that's where my problem lies.

I have reduced the motor pinion to a 10 tooth and increased the throttle to a 95% flat line but this still causes the ESC to heat up and cut out.

So can I upgrade to a 60-75amp controller and all my issues will go away??

The motor is an Align 420LF and the current ESC an Align 35amp.

    Suggestions please...

Trex 450 5 Bladed Head Conversion - ESC Question

      What esc are you using?
It could just be a faulty one or you could always just go up a step as they are still very cheap.

I don't know but I would say the blades you are using are the problem a club member recently did this to his 450 the blades are very thin

Trex 450 5 Bladed Head Conversion - ESC Question

I don't believe the current ESC is at fault as it flew perfectly on the original FB head.

For testing purposes I've removed the mechanics from the fuz and set it up as a pod n boom, the ESC is an Align 35amp. Plenty of air around it and its still get hot, the motor is still cool - think an up rated ESC is the answer.

Try using the flight calculator on the Castle Creations website to see what amps your setup is drawing http://www.ecalc.ch/helicalc.htm?castle&lang=en I suspect you'll need a much lower kv motor to bring the headspeed down and stay with the esc limits.
