Re: Half piro flips first attempt

I started trying them at the field first but really couldn't get the timing right and found it rather frustrating. Now having forced myself to put in some sim time I'm feeling much more confident and happier I'm moving in the right direction. Roll on some nice weather.

Secondly I know for myself learning a move like this, which seems to be the Holy Grail for 3d flight, I'd find it impossible to even attempt without sim time. I was wondering has anyone has been successful at this type of manoeuvre without the intervention of the sim ? That would truly be remarkable.

No delay for me, as soon as I could do half pirouette consistently on the sim, I've done them at the field on all my helis.
Imo the trick is consistency, you need to be able to do them continuously, in place and while talking to your girlfriend, for a good couple of minutes.
I am close to this with full piroflips now, we will see how this goes at the field when weather is flyable, but I won't hesitate to try :sly:
I think these are impossible to learn properly, unless on the sim or buddy box.

Spent some more time today doing half flips. Had a few moments but both helis back home in one bit so all good.
Did the first flight of the day on the Goblin and my wife was there to video a bit before she got bored and wondered off. Was first flight so a bit shaky but here is where I am at.

Was loving doing them so much once I started I couldn't stop. :-) Did a couple of packs on the 500 fairly much all half piro flips. Still all over the sky but starting to get the idea.

          Looking good.

          Thanks for posting.

I've got to say that the Goblin colour scheme really has does pop against that blue sky. Seems the weathers a lot better in the part of the world you are in. Here in Birmingham UK the weather is atrocious, grey, windy and cold

Just love the vis of the Gob.
Today was a little chilly maybe 8 deg or something. Yesterday was over 20 but the wind switched to the north in the afternoon and the pollution was so bad you couldn't stay out side. After 5 flights on the 500 the front of the blades were black. There are some good points to living in China, Cheap, cheap heli stuff etc but the pollution this winter has just been shocking. Today even though a bit nippy was a total contrast.

            Cheers

The video that Tim posted is excellent to see what happens as an example of how things should look. I also agree with Acid drink that the Nick Maxwell one tank tip is a much better explanation for what to do. I'm in the process of learning this stuff again and the word timing implies a rhythmical approach which I don’t think explains what one should do very well.

Nick's explanation of "driving through the manoeuvre" gets pennies dropping for me. It also explains how this "driving" allows you to perform other related moves more easily.

As an example of this, try flying sideways circuits both left and right, then the same inverted. It makes you realise just what you can't do well and how much there is to learn (again!)

I've pretty much got halfs nailed IRL and am moving on to the full now. One thing that threw me was that halfs always end tail in (if you start them tail in) but fulls and doubles end tail out inverted and tail in RWU.

I'll try and post some vids of my attempts on the sim for your appraisal. I'm obviously just re-learning these things again (after 10 years out) so I'm no expert but all the vids posted seem to be on the right track.

              Cheers D
