  • The Turbine Flies

    We knew it flies but this was a good flight incorporating some aerobatic move of the turbine at the field today, Saturday.

            Hey.

            Thanks for posting the video Andy, I can send it on to Vaughan.

            It is a quick model and i wasn't specifically trying to make it fly fast, it tracks well in the sky to which inspires confidence.

            Being honest I'm not pushing this model as hard as it could fly, it is still very new so I was cautious of the BVM UAT header tank releasing it's last air bubbles (hence the safe height to auto from if need be) and also to make sure everything is still tight that needs to be. Plus its not my model and its just great hovering it in all honesty, I to have put a lot of time into the final build and setup, so I am enjoying flying it for what it is.

            Today's flights were mainly for the owner of this awesome machine to see and appreciate all his hard work he put in to the conversion, it made me so happy to see and hear his excitement at seeing the flying model. He also had a quick go on the buddy lead to make the wait in getting it to this stage all the more worthwhile, that was a good memory.

            I have a couple of things I'm going to change, for added security, but otherwise its good to go and I'll make minor setup changes to throttle curves as I go along.

            After a conversation about scale bodies, I mentioned the gorgeous looking Black Shark fuselages and so future plans may include fitting this model into one of these;

            How good would that be, a turbine F3C style model.

              What do you send to Vaughan? I can copy the actual video to disk so he has it at the highest quality.

                Hello mate.

                I've just emailed him the YouTube link, but if you could pop the videos you've taken on a DVD for me that would be great. He'd really appreciate that, thanks.

                  Sounds amazing. Doesn't sound as high pitched or as loud as other turbines. Well done.

                      The airframe started life as a T-Rex 700. The frames were modified by the owner Vaughan to take a Wren turbine.

                      You can now purchase a modified frameset so you don't need to do the work yourself.

                        Hey.

                        As above the model is a stock Trex 700 (or 744 if you use the Wren turbine designation) with the lower frames extended downwards by some 18~20mm to allow for the increased depth of the turbine.
                        The front of the turbine casing needed bracing, so I got hold of a carbon adio tray and designed an ali clamping ring which secured the turbine to the underside of the carbon radio tray. I shot the CAD drawing to Vaughan and he machined it up in his workshop, which is a modellers dream I might add.

                        There are a couple of frame sets available now to convert a 700N to turbine, NHP have one off the top of my head, but I have not seen it close up.
