  • Trex 450 explosion caught on onboard GoPro camera

I was doing some test flying behind the house and my Trex 450 exploded because the cheap ebay feathering shaft M2x6mm bolt snapped. I thought I could share my sadness..

Bad luck mate. Be glad there was no damage or injury from the flying blades!
I had a bolt let go a while back, caught on camera. I noticed some odd nodding so brought it down for a closer look, them....

Thats very annoying when that happens!!
I had a feathering shaft bolt snap in flight it was about 25m up and the blades just flew of about 50m each side and the heli just fell out of the sky!!!

It was an Rc skewz stainless steel bolt, the best bolt to use is the stock align one as the stainless steel ones are too brittle!!

Hope it gets fixed soon dude

That's bad. I've had no problems with my 450MT except for the blades coming off when I forgot I hadn't loctited them. I didn't believe the scare stories about dodgy feathering shafts. I do now.

Gotta love those noises, like it's screaming! All part of the fun/madness I guess! I had a blade let go earlier in the year. Made me jump alright! lol.

Thanks guys for the support. I was devastated when that happened because it took me so long to perfectly set my heli but I feel bit better now from your supports. Yes, I totally agree on avoiding rubbish bolt. After the incident, I googled and found there are different strength scale for bolt - I realised 12.9 is the strongest one and bought some on the ebay. I hope it will give me a piece of mind this time

by the way, if you loctite the bolt, how do you take them out in case if you want to take them out? The hex screw is infamously difficult to take out when it stuck. I know people use dramel method to make a slit to take it out with straight driver, but once it's in the blade grip you can't even use dremel..

Use a "weak" loctite - I have few different types, I think the weak one is 243 but someone can confirm.
Always use a good quality hex, especially on smaller heads like the 1.5mm in there. MIP Thorp is ace, but so are Align and others. I've never rounded a bolt since binning the cheap L shaped hexes and getting decent ones, even the cheesey HK bolts come out clean.

Sorry to hear..a good locktight, and not to overtighten as it could stress fracture the cap bolt. I had a logo 500 where the cap bolt snapped, and the blades went 100 mtrs either way.. took me an hour to find them! These were original mikado items aswell..
