  • My N5 Crash

Flying the N5 last weekend, (a friend was filming) did a fast climb out, and lost control of the tail
a short time after ended up crashing
On inspection looks the tail boom had moved forward.
Why do'nt they make tail booms rough either end to grip better on the N5, or even have locking collers.
Have'nt done a costing yet, just put it in a corner till I calm down

That sucks I'd be surprised if it was the boom slipping in; I never had a problem with mine in over 100 flights. Something I found on a used N9 I bought though, is that if you over tighten the clamps, it will slightly crush the boom and then it won't grip it properly. The way to tell this is to remove the boom and have a very close look at the points where it was clamped, and make sure it's not a slightly smaller diameter to the rest of the boom.

Another theory could be that the belt was a little on the loose side, and it snagged causing it to pull the boom in (although again, I did hear my belt being a little loose when bedding it in and never had a problem).

On a different note, your engine tuning is quite a way off, and also the head speed sounds pretty low. Come over once it's rebuilt and we'll have a look at it

        Hi Jamie,

Yeh I know the engine was way out of tune, was going to start a fresh with that on the next flight,,,
Did hear a funny noise before it went in, really sick, I was starting to like the heli alot and have'nt had any probs with the tail, must of had 25 flights to date,
Will do the boom checks on rebuild and will pop over to sort the engine out.
have a 55 in the Titan which was also filmed on the day so will upload that,, like to know how you think it sounds.
        Cheers

Ouch!! .. Never good to see!! But! It can be rebuilt!! We have the technology!! .... Better! .... Faster! .... Stronger!

I will echo Jamie's comments in that I have also seen a few instances where the boom clamps have been overtightened and crushed the boom slightly causing the boom to move, and even more so with the tension the assembly is under due to the belt. I did have this on a second hand N9 I purchased so I replaced the boom to all the clamps to grip the boom correctly. The clamps have a wide clamping area and should grip the boom very securely. With the N5 if you align the boom with the front clamp as per the manual and tighten the lower bolt of the clamp slowly until it just starts to grip the boom then do the same with the rear clamp and then just tighten up the bolt a little kore secure fully. What you are looking for is a gap in the split in the boom clamp of approx 0.5mm, if the split in the clamp is fully closed it's too far and will have crushed the boom.

If I can help out in anyway just give me a shout!, I'm always happy to help!
          Thanks!

I'm surprised you didn't get it into hold. It sounded bad as soon as you came out of the climb out. They don't crash very well do they. Lovely helli but bloody dear to fix. Good luck with getting it back in the air

I'm a bit deaf in my right ear,, must be why I did'nt hear it earlier,, may also be why I have trouble tuning engines
