  • This is what happened

Some of you will remember I burnt my hand when a fag was put into a empty nitro bottle I was carrying, and some of you said you'd like to see what it was like.
So tonight I made a video. What you see is exactly what happened. Empty fuel bottle plus ignition source.
I did use a naked flame in the video but that was only because I don't smoke.
Please don't start on health and safety, I did it at my own risk and took precautions so I could share my experience with you, and to try and make people think twice before lighting up a fag when there's nitro fuel/vapour about.

I find it difficult to set light to OptiFuel on the ground (tried to burn some spilt fuel away) but my car fuel was a different story - it was still 20% nitro but burned like petrol.

Now I wonder if there is a difference in fuels - are some fuels more combustible out of the engine than others.

I've got a nearly empty bottle of Optifuel, If I can get a safe environment this week I'll try the same experiment.

Yea it's better thanks mate, there are a few parts where the top layer of skin is growing back but it's all good. I could use it completely 3 days after it happened, it was just a bit tender at times

Im using model technics (12% I think). I think it would be harder to set it alight when it's just been spilt on the ground because the vapour is less dense because its dispursed into the air. But in the bottle the vapour would be more concentrated so it would be easier to ignite

just be aware that lighting spilt fuel on the ground can be hazardous in daylight because you can't see the flames.so you may not think its burning.A mate of mine was badly burnt whilst drag racing bikes after a crash the bike was blazing he was writhing on the ground and the marshal spent time putting out the bike and did not realise mitches leathers were actually on fire.

Very much so, you can't see any flame on the car fuel but you can certainly hear it burning - and it burns real hot !

                More

I had just poured the leftovers from one bottle to the other and had the dregs to play with...so just had to see dan's experiment for myself. It's impressive!
Then I realised that that jet out of the top of the bottle is self-extinguishing..it's just the vapour. So I waited a short while and was able to repeat the same jet of flame by offering another match (on a long stick). And the leftovers in the bottle are still highly combustible when poured out even after that.

My point being that even if you have Dan's accident or decide to play with fire...that jug of fuel is still a hazard even after flaming it once or twice. Stay Safe

The bottle I used in the video was empty, just the vapour.
Now, if I see someone with a fag in their mouth in the pits, I tend to keep a fair distance away because it's the vapour you need to worry about.

Scary isn't it?..less than a teaspoon left in mine and looked good for a few blasts..

Ok, as promised, we tried the same experiment with an empty can of Optifuel 20 SLV to see if the same effect is present.

There was about a table spoon full of fuel in the can, we did have to try quite hard to ignite it, in the end it took a large naked flame to do the trick but it does show the same tendency to flare.
