  • My first Video of me flying my 700.

As I mostly fly on my own, I never get any film of me flying. My mate came and flew with me on Saturday, and he also filmed me for the first time flying my 700 till rain stopped play.

Does any one know how to reduce the white glare on the camcorder recordings? It is set to auto for exposure, so does the cam need a filter screwed in front of the lens?

The video cameras I have used have ND filters built in and will indicate when a filter is needed. I always use a polorised
lense as well when shooting in sunlight. You can also get ND filters as a separate lense you can attach.

It definitely looks like the auto exposure cannot cope with that much light.

Exposure and white balance are both set to auto.

Adding a ND (neutral density) filter to the front of the lens when using auto-exposure will make no difference as the camera will compensate for the reduced light coming through by opening the aperture (or decreasing the shutter speed); it's why people get grey snow when it should be white, the camera is trying to turn everything into an 18%-grey average. The answer is to use exposure compensation if your camcorder has it and INCREASE the exposure. This causes the camera to compensate for what it believes is more light coming in and hence closes the aperture (or uses a faster shutter speed) and will thus reduce the glare.

            Cheers

Martin, so you are saying don't use the auto exposure, but to manually set it high?

Kind of. If you use manual exposure then the setting won't change if, for example, you film the heli in bright sky and then with a background of trees. So if it's set to give the correct exposure against the sky, then when you go into the darker background your picture will go very dark as the camera will not compensate. What I am talking about is exposure compensation and whilst I'm talking from a still-camera point of view I am assuming that video cameras have the same functions. Exposure compensation still allows the camera's meter to alter the exposure depending on light levels. It will still be dark if you go into shadow but not as bad.

If you use MANUAL exposure you will have to set it such that the amount of light coming into the camera is LESS and so must close the aperture or increase the shutter speed. If you use EXPOSURE COMPENSATION you must tell the meter that there is MORE light coming in than there actually is.

In summary; altering 'manual exposure' directly controls the amount of reaching the recording medium whereas 'exposure compensation' affects what the meter tells the camera to do with the incoming light.

Don't know if that helps but good flying anyway. Nice to see someone flying a heli well but normally and not maniacally throwing it all over the sky as in 3D.

                Cheers

Further to what I said above. I have just had another look at your video and, exposure and stuff aside, I think you may just be better off if you can adjust the contrast as that seems to be the biggest problem.
