Flying Figure 8s in the garden, not very well, but improving... Gusty conditions this weekend didn't help.

Looking good, I'd suggest that you get rid of the training gear, you are clearly confident enough and you will make better progress without the "legs"

      Cheers,
      Simon

Cheers for that. I'm happy tail in without the gear, but I still can't get out of the habit of dropping it down when I lose orientation. Should be able to ditch it soon tho...

Leave the gear on until you are happy with controlled landings, practice landings and take offs some more. Just up 3 feet, hold and steadily controlled down until it becomes natural. Then move sideways a little and land, take off and move back the other way and land. Soon comes to you and then you will be more confident with the eights as well.
Happy and safe flying and safe landings.

Looking good, I would take the training gear off as well. It makes things much easier & the heli flys better without it! Taking it off makes you think more about your landings which will stop you dropping the heli like a stone when you panic!!

This is how I built up to taking the training gear off. I used to run 4 packs each outing, and at least one of those was doing nothing more than taking off and landing after a brief hover. Then slide over in the hover and land somewhere else. Once I could land smooth and without travelling sideways I knew I could do it without.
