  • Hovering Question

Hi All First post on the forum.
I have a Trex 500 clone with a Digital tail servo and G105 gyro and use a DX8 with 23% gyro gain Heading hold on.
In the hover the model sits with the nose to the right (Tail to the Left) I correct it with rudder input butit returns to the same place. The model is on the flat and upright when the gyro initializes.
I have read the Gyro setup on the Beginners area and as per that If turn off the heading hold the tail will hold the model so I think I have linkages etc set up correctly.
Can Anyone got any thoughts on what the problem may be.
    Thanks
    Stuart.

So you turn off heading hold and it holds? You turn ON heading hold and it drifts?

Try more gain, I use 45-65 for HH mode on the DX8 on my 550 and 30-40 on the 450.
Rate mode on DX8 is a negative figure.

        Hi
challis349 not realy I set up the model so with HH off the tail holds the model so I know that the tail blades have the correct amount of pitch in the center stick position. but when I turn on the HH the when the model is in the hover it sits with the nose pointing to the right if I correct it so the nose is pointing away from me when I relase the rudder stick the nose returns to the right.

Ben I will try uping it I did befor but I got tail wag in that I think I had too migh gain.

          Hi

Challis349 Not quite - I set up the gyro as described in "Modern RC Helicopter Gyros and Tail Setups –What You Need to Know" PDF in the beginners section so that when the Gyro in in Normal mode the tail has sufficient pitch in the neutral position to hold the model. If it then turn on the HH mode the nose swings about 5 degrees to the right. If I correct it with rudder control when center the rudder stick it returns to the right.

Hi Ben I did have it higher bit had tail wag bit I will up the gain next time I go flying and see that happens.

Should always fly in HH mode. An easy way to tell if you move the rudder to one side why it is sitting on the bench and let the stick come back to the middle the tail should stay there. That is because the gyro is trying to do your move but because its sitting on the bench the heli never gets there so keeps trying. If let the stick go and the rudder centers it self that is rate mode. Took me a while to get my brain around it.

First thing make sure you are in HH mode then wherever you stop with stick inputs the heli should stop rotating. If it keeps rotating your are either not in HH mode or your gain is too low.

Also how have you got it mounted, on foam tape? They are very sensitive to vibrations and small vibrations can cause problems.

I normally fly in HH mode and know it's in HH mode as the Light on the Gyro is on, also when i carry the model out to the strip I can hear/fell the servo moving as the model moves.
The Gyro is mounted on servo tape the same as my 450' models.

Hi challis349 that seem to do the trick I had the gyro set to low.
                Thanks.
