  • help an ageing man

    hi all

ok so im not old lol but i am slowly recoving from an head illness that left me "slow" as my so nicly son would say ,in fact im relearning alot of things again.

been on the simulater for hours on hours relearning the basics etc as i don't really want to try repair my models (mostly custum ) so as an winter project i building an "trail" model to A: past time and B:learn to setup helicopters plus i like the building just much as flying...well i used to. so bare in mind im not flying it till given nod by trainer that im caple with the 300-450 class's again.

so the help i need is i ordered an HK599GT (i am aware of parts needing/recommend replacing).

i problem i have is the motor-esc-lipo side of things i would like to fit an "AX Typhoon 500H Heli Motor 1800kv" outrunner motor on 12 teeth pinion (is that the standard pinion ?)

its rated at 55amp (motor) but i can't or having trouble working out esc i need and what batterys , also Bec is esc witch powers the Rx right ?

thanks for reading hope you can help
also hope it all makes enough sense

You will need at least a 65 amp ESC, for example something like this for this motor:
    http://www.fast-lad.co.uk/store/csep...ss-p-7878.html

Be VERY careful of buying a cheap HobbyKing ESC!

By the way, is is a HK599GT, or HK500GT that you have purchased? if it is the HK500GT, then GiantCod recommended Battery: 2 x 2200mAh 3S 20C or greater, see here:

After a hard lesson learnt by trying to buy a cheap ESC from China, from now on I will only ever purchase either a Castle, or Kontronik controller - you get what you pay for!

Again, for peace of mind, if you buy from Fast Lad Performance, or Midland Helicopters, you know that you will get the ultimate in aftersales service (should you need it)!

I don't know the hk599gt and couldn't find it on google. If you work out the motor speed you need from the headspeed and the gearing then you can work out the lipos that you need. The kV figure is the rpm per volt. So with your motor (1800kv) on a 3cell battery (12.6V) max you would get a max rpm of 1800X12.6 or about 22,000 rpm.If your gearing is 10:1 then your headspeed would be 2,200.

That would be the max and in practice the volts and the rpm would drop as soon as the motor starts and would drop further through the flight.

Usually on a 500 people use 4 to 6 cells and from 2000 to 3000mah. The esc usually includes a bec which gives 5 to 6 volts for the rx and servos. The standard bec is called a linear which is inefficient but ok for 3 cell or less with low current servos. With a heli and 4 cells you need an esc with a ubec or sbec that is much more efficient. You can buy them on their own for about £10.

Do you have a link to the heli?

The Castle esc has a switching bec so will stay cool.
The Hk kits are ok but do need careful checking. You may not get all the parts and they may not put in the right place. The head will need to be taken apart then locktited and all the links set to the right length. Some of the parts may not be made correctly and could cause binding if not adjusted. All of the screws on my HK450 have different socket sizes, but most of them are ok on a good 1.5mm allen key although none of them work with a ball driver.

                        6s 3000mah will be fine.

                        I use 2650s to save some weight, I think these would be adequate;
