  • Bl**dy RL53

Well what a wasted day. 1chris and myself have been mucking around trying to get his Redline 53h to run all day. It has been fine but after a rebuild (Heli not engine) and re fuel line it will not tune for love nor money.

OK here it is, it will run up then at the main needle will either die where it is too lean or 2 clicks richer and it will not lift. We have shorten the cluck line so it is 10mm away from the back of the tank, but still no change.

So at 1pm we drove to his house removed the engine (T-Rex 600 total ball ache) striped the carb cleaned it and set the hidden needle to a 1mm gap as per hidden needle post ont internet. (this resolved issue on my RL53) Reinstalled the engine and back to the field to test, and you guessed exactly the same.

So here we are guys some fresh eyes and suggestions as this has really got us stumped which is quite unusual between us we can sort most stuff.

    Extra notes:

Fuel lines are not crimped or chafing.
    Clunk line is hayes.
Vent line is free and not blocked.
RL Hi-Flo pipe is clean and the nipple is not blocked.
Fuel flow from tank is fine on the ground.

Ask me question no matter how silly just in case we haven't seen the wood for the trees.

We were running an Enya 3 but swapped it out before doing anything else. Sorry should have put that in the post. And the head bolts were tested when the engine was out.

One of the people I fly with has one of these fitted in a Raptor and we where trying for ages to get it to run consistantly, and one thing that helped a lot was running it at a high headspeed, we leaned it out, and increased his throttle curve (it was set a bit low for some reason) and decreased his max pitch a little, it seemed to get rid of most of the problems, not all but most.

From a bit of guestimation (we didn't have a tacho handy) the headspeed ended up being around 2k, before it cant have been much over 1500, just this change made a lot of difference.

Its not running perfect, there is still some hesitation every now and again causing a small bit of wandering on the tail, but its a LOT better than it was.

Not sure what headspeed you're running, you didn't say, but if it is low maybe this will help.

I run a 53 with OS carb mod and never had tuning issues since. It hangs on the pipe sometimes even though not lean but apart from that, wonderful.

I had mad problems with my RL53 and fitted the OS carb mod too which really helped things. TT carbs are renowned for binding

Head speed would be about 1750 rpm, its in normal mode 39% throttle curve 0 pitch at centre stick

The problem is as the throttle transitioned through the 50% open mark the engine quits

Starts very rich, leans out richens up then quits, some times not enough power to lift the helicopter

As stated earlier we have set the throttle, including the third needle as per the factory defaults

Note that up to about a month ago the helicopter has flown perfectly for more or less a year

The engine has had about 15 gallons of fuel through it

Strip the carb down then and really clean it, blow some compressed air through every hole in it, actually I'd ditch it and stick an OS one on it as suggested, so far everyone who has done this says its instantly fixed their motor.
