  • Lipo storage

    Hi

    Please could someone advise on how long it's OK to leave lipos standing in storage on a FULL CHARGE. I am aware that my BC6 will charge/discharge to an ideal level but I am hoping to go and maiden my Trex 500 as soon as the wind dies down and so my fully charged lipos are on constant 'stand by'.

    Many thanks for any help.

    I would like to know as well. I've just bought 3 new lipo's and they have been fully charged for about 10 days. Every time I have a day off or spare time its either too windy or its raining. I'm off at the weekend and its looks like its going to be ideal flying weather so it will be about 12 days at fully charged.

      I think there are two issues:

      The pack capacity changes with temperature. eg If a fully charged pack (at room temp) is left in a colder place, it will end up overcharged -> damage;

      According to an article in BMFA mag, if a pack is left fully charged for a year, it loses 5% of its capacity. (IIRC)

      I doubt either of these will cause you significant problems ?

      You could consider charging to (eg) 95%.
      Yes, it's th@ tw@ Scallyb@...

        I would say over a week and it would be best to use storage charge, two weeks max.

            Agreed - Two weeks max at full charge. If I'm not flying for unforeseen reasons over that time I'll discharge them to 50% capacity.

              Well i've just left my 6s revo's & a turnigy for around a month, one partially discharged the other 2 charged. The 2 revo's with around 200 cycles had more punch than ever which shocked me. The Turnigy is still an animal. The reason my packs were left is because my logo has been grounded, but now is flying sweeeeeet.

                Lipo manufacturers generally send them out at 50% charged- the user is then supposed to charge at 1c and take it easy for the first few flights,,, I've still got lipo's from 2yrs now and they still give good service- I always put them on storage charge(basically half charged)- can leave them for up to a month and know they'll still work when I need them....

                    I was looking at becoming a Roustabout 11yrs ago now, looked into it but didn't persue it.

                      Well, mine have been stored at 50%, came to fly yesterday after charging everything up and one of my Hyperion batteries has a dead cell. At nearly 100 quid per pack, I'm not that impressed. Stripped all the covering back and all the wires are in place, so it's now relaxing in a bath of salt in the garden. My other pack is okay, plus the two Turnigy packs.

                      Never really noticed much difference with leaving charged or 50%, but as said earlier packs can vary in voltage according to temp, which can cause damage.
                      Cheers,
                      Simon
