  • Trex 550L Dominator Governor question

I have a 550L and it has a Hobbywing ESC and VBar Neo, I upgraded to the Hobbywing from a Talon because i wanted RPM output.

When I first set it up I used the VBar e-governor as I thought it was the best way to set it up.
It flew well, BTW I am not a 3D pilot, still learning, 8 years later!

I went for a lesson and was informed that i should use the Hobbywing governor as it is better, so the VBar was changed to external Governor and Hobbywing tweaked for this, throttle curves setup too. (I only fly in Bank1 at the moment)

Maybe its me but I do not think it flies as well as it did when i first set it up and thinking of putting it back to use the internal governor on the VBar.

Just wondering what others recomendations are.

    Thanks in advance

    Paul

      Hi Ade,
Ok, compared to my Nitro's running the VBar Nitro gov.
With the 550, i am always having to add pitch to get back up and not hit the deck.
I do not remember struggling when using the VBar gov on the 550, I think 'Stable' is the word.

The nitros i do not seem to have this issue using the VBar Gov, my height is constant and stable, yes i can hear the compensation but to me that is a good thing.

I was given advice by someone who has more knowledge than me and I listen to people who know more than i do.

      Regards, Paul

Oh I see.... sorry I misread your post initially.

esc govs are generally rubbish. in steady state they do ok. but they lack the information to predict what the load will be in the very near future so when you start throwing it around the gov is always a little behind. the rpm has to drop a little before it will increase the power to maintain the rpm.

Far better to use the vbar gov. I have not played with it myself by the vortex gov is far better than any esc gov, Imagine as you move the sticks around the vbar knows the power required for that stick position. So it feeds that power in as you move the stick, rather than waiting for the rpm to drop then putting the extra power in to try to bring the rpm back to where it should be.

It sounds like a tiny difference but its defo noticeable.

Another thing to consider: are you sure you are running the same head speed with the HW gov as you were with the vBar gov? If you happen to be running a lower head speed, then that may also be causing it to feel sluggish.

The HW gov is actually excellent. I’m not saying it’s better than the Vbar gov but for sure if the heli is not flying well then it’s not an inherent weakness of ghe HW gov at fault. It could easily be as simple as headspeed set too low.
Having said all of this, if it was flying to your liking with the Vbar gov then easiest solution might be to go back to using it.
