If the engine is new it will need to be run in, as per the instruction manual.

I think the Irvine is a ringed engine, but im not 100% sure, lots of the irvine fixed wing engines are ABC and the running in is very different.

The needle settings will not be the same from one engine to the other, and it sounds like you are running too lean on the main needle.

Set it to the stock (instruction manual) settings for running in and then take it from there.

I've just found the manual. Ignore the low speed needle for now (the screw in the throttle barrel itself that you turn with a flat head screwdriver).

The main needle (the ridged needle to hand turn), should be set at 3 whole turns out from closed - so gently turn it fully clockwise, (counting how many times it makes a complete turn) until it wont go any further (dont use force), and then turn it anticlockwise three whole turns out and then try things from there.

That setting is usually quite rich, but that is the better way to be, and you can then lean it in, but (from personal experience) they do run well enough like that to be able to fly on those settings.

It would be interesting to know what its set to now....
