  • Blade 450 3D strangeness

    Hi all,

Could do with a bit of advice as experiencing some strange behaviour with my 450 blade 3d.

On power on the speed controller beeps as armed and then the swashplate moves and then returns to the correct position; sometimes the tail servo also kicks and then returns. On spool up as I lift the throttle the swash plates starts to move and then sometimes suddenly drops before moving back to the correct position. If I do this again then the swash moves correctly.. It's all a bit random! With the motor disconnected I get none of this - Everything seems fine as long as the motor isn't spining the rotors.

With the model in the air all seems ok but just doesn't feel right..

I've checked the electronics to make sure all is secure (and it is) and checked the mechanics - no binding at all, nice and smooth. Pitch and throttle curves are good..everything looks just fine. It seems that once it's under power something very strange is happening.

The model has just had a new main gear which stripped because basically the tail just started to go crazy last time I took it out. Again all was fine and then next time the tail just started to do strange things..

Not really sure what to try next tbh but I'm terrified of flying the thing..

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Regards,

    Simon

I had something similar on a fixed wing where all the servos worked correctly with no load on the motor. As soon as the motor was under load there was lot's of servo twitching. It turned out to be a failing BEC on the electronic speed controller. As soon as load went to the motor then there was not enough power to the receiver and servo's. A new ESC fixed the problem. Does everything work okay with motor connected but throttle hold engaged?

take off the blades and try revving it up and down and work the controls.
It might give you a clue
i changed an esc when the heli started dropping out on power for just a split second but enough to drop it 2 feet or so.
      what fbl have you got?

The simple solution is to go with the stock ESC again - although it's far from being the best around. But it would be a drop-in replacement with no extra programming or the like.

Failing that, a good budget ESC would be the YEP40A - but you'll need a progcard also, and you'll need to program it correctly for helicopters.
There is also the Castle Talon 35A, a bit more expensive - and again you'll need a castlelink and a PC to complete the programming for it.

Both the Talon and YEP have strong BECs.

Depending on age/etc - you could try sending the ESC back to Horizon Hobby in Essex - they might replace it for free.

When I converted my 450 to flybarless, the standard esc wouldn't provide enough power for the servos. I got a Castle Talon 35 which is flawless.

                    All,

Just a note to say thanks for all your help.

Popped the Talon in at the weekend and magically all of my issues have disappeared!

Gonna have a play with governor mode shortly

                    Thanks again.
