  • Question on Robart Pin Hinge and how to use it

I'm having to use the above because I had to cut the CA hinge after I've installed my rudder.
Anyway, I have drilled holes in my rudder (3mmm drill) for the robart pin hinge to go in
    First problem:
Robart pin hinge is 1/8th... the barbed ends go in the hole ok but the pin hinge gets fatter nearer the pin hinge... How do I make sure it goes in the hole? Do I need to drill bigger?

    2nd problem:
My tail fin, I have drilled holes but the tail fin's structure is not solid. My drill goes through the wood. The robart pin hinge goes through. Is this ok?
Will I need to cut the pin hinge short or can I leave it hanging on the other end of the wood?

I do not have a photo but I did a quick sketch

Personally I wouldn't use Robart hinges at all, as they have to have the hinge axis perfectly aligned with the structure to avoid stiffness, also unless the fin etc is not at least 1/4 " thick then they weaken it too much.
Far better, cheaper, easier, quicker to use hinge tape ( it's like sellotape but much stronger ) and form the hinges on each side of the fin and rudder.
But if you're determined to use Robart type, then they don't need the excess removed and a gentle easing of the hole with a 3mm rat tail file will give you a comfortable fit, then lock 'em in with CA. Good luck.

Brains and thumbs work okay, but not at the same time.

Thanks. Unfortunately I have to use pin hinge. I would have preferred CA hinge again but because I had to cut the original CA hinge and there's no room on the fin for me to cut slots in so I've been told to drill holes for pin hinges instead.

You don't cut slots when using hinge tape. You just lay the tape flat onto the fin and rudder, half each, both sides. Google it and you'll be surprised how easi it is to do, and how strong too.
