Foundation depth...?

Why not use 8foot timber fence post, concrete them in 2 feet deep, they'll be solid then build your bench of that with gallows brackets (diagonal braces) then you tie the tops of the post together to create a pergola.
Hi Jimmy, I have just worked it out around £50 for a verry heavy duty table. Benefits portable.
Thats using x4 post 1.5x75x75 Sawn £2.16 per foot, post pushed into soil or dug in, 2 Batons 38X100X3ft Sawn long £1.36 per foot screwed 1 @ each end top, Top X6 150x38x1.5 Sawn £2.05 per ft. Box screws 3"X12 £7ish. When all together give the top a sanding just to smooth it off.
That will give you a bench 1MT High X .900 Wide X 1.5 Long, If you did not sink it into the ground 2MTRS saved But would need some braces.

The footings ideally, Dig down until you reach mud = all depends on the ground and what you want, But you need to start off firm ground.

thanks for putting a lot of time and effort into that answer, cracking detail... lots to consider now! Always is when people are kind enough to pitch in with ideas...

Often what I first think of, isnt really the best way to get the job done, so im very grateful for all of your input

We have two very substantial tables at our field, both resting on a patio slab at each corner. Never had an issue for years
Ok, so fencing posts + post spikes = £80

Breeze + paving slabs = £54 - cost of mortar...

thinking of going with PGK's paving slab idea... plus it means not having to sweat driving the post spikes in, and not having to deal with hitting a load of hardcore which im pretty sure is hidden under there.

No concrete to worry about either, just possibly some mortar..... shame they dont make breeze blocks like lego ;)
farm style fence posts you don't use post spikes..round posts with points .. dig a starting hole and thump the devils in .. tanalised and last a few years (modern tanalising is rubbish. If you really want them to last you do naughty things with roofing tar and old oil)

They do make breeze blocks like lego..the one's with holes down them you hammer a spike through <g>.. but as i said paving slab, a set of blocks, paving slab, next layer.. will last forever if you make sure the first set slabs is level. I loose layed a pathway through one of my glasshouses 2 years ago.. still no rocking and i'm walking on that twice a day.

Or if you really want to go fnacy then speak to one of the timber mills out here in the sticks and get a few slabs cut to your dimensions.. say 3 inch thick and 15 in wide and as long as you want...cut some as uprights and the rest as cros pices. We used that for the opening through to the new conservatory. Nice larch pretty weatherproof too. Only thing is you need a lot of msucle to shift one of them!

Or drive up here and I'll give you a 4 metre treetruck.. all you have to do is level off the top and use a wedge or two to stop it rolling. You will probably need a flatbed and crane to load it through...

Transit, pub visit at 3am, take bench, deliver to field, repeat till required number of benches is reached. Place a sheet of thin ply over each bench. Use excess ply to make small squares to place under each leg on levelled & compacted ground. Job done, enjoy benches, maybe draw little heli picture on them. Use Gav's ready mix to make weights to tie to centre of bench keeping it stable

Thanks paddy, but not sure it's really worth getting a criminal record over :(

plus, they would be 7.3cm too short.... That's a given ;)

                    James,

Not sure how you have decided as yet regarding the bench, but if it helps I think I can get 3x 8' (2.4mtr) round fence posts (cut in half so 6x 4' (1.2mtr)). Only problem by the time you sink 200mm into the ground you would only have 1mtr plus top thickness working height, unless you dont sink them and just brace as a 6 legged table?

But if this is any good, let me know and I'll see what I can progress.

I think I'm going to go with the paving slab breeze block idea.

one thing I forgot about is the rabbit den that we are building over..... I don't know how deep the burrows are but driving poles into the ground might have it's disadvantages....

I'm going to take a quick look tonight ....
