  • Yet another newbie seeking advice!

    Hello all,
I,ve been lerking around the forum for a while and have decided to dive in.
I'm a long time plank flyer (30+ years) and about every 5 years or so get this
urge to play with helicopters, the last time I got as far as thrashing a twister/cx2
hybrid around and have recently been playing with a mcx.
I now feel the need to progress futher but am a bit confused by the choices available.
I'll mainly be flying in a faily large but unforgiving indoor space (but I do want to fly outdoors sometimes),
my first thought was to go for a Esky big lama but I think this might be a bit of a dead end.
The other helis under consideration are : Blade 120sr or SR, (note, I've read the posts and theres no
    Honey bee in my future!).
I do have a pet lapsed heli flyer to hand to help me but he admits hes a bit behind the curve with current
heli stuff.(he says to go the cp route).
I have a JR pcm 10x heli tx ( aquired some years ago along with Kyosho concept, unflown!) which would only need a Spektrum module to bring it upto date, too much to soon?
So any and all advice will be greatfully accepted
Ps dont want to spend shed loads of money yet as I'm still at the toe dipping stage but I'm keen.

    Thanks all.
    Paul.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

As many will say have a look at the Blade MCPx. This is a micro size CP heli. Great for indoor and outdoor (light wind).

Welcome. Perhaps try a blade 120 sr. Not the best, but taught me a lot, and pretty durable. Msr are also pretty good. Neither can stand a lot of wind tho.

Thanks chaps, I've done a bit poking around on the net and it would seem the mcpx is the weapon of choice at the moment.
However having watched all the videos the mcpx might be a bit much for me I think although I assume it could be toned down
abit with the right tx setup?
I think I'm going to go for the 120sr with a DX6i as it looks to fit in with what I want ie not to small, not to expensive and a reasonable step up from a coaxial.
I think I'll leave the SR alone as it would appear not to be as learner friendly as Eflite would have you believe and there seems to be far to many nearly new ones on the second hand market.
Anyway I shall return with lots more qeustions I'm sure and thank you all for your help.

        Cheers,
        Paul.

I have not tried an mcpx yet Paul but I have heard that they can be a but of a handfull for someone just starting out. I know I started with a 450 size heli which was more stable and easy enough to wok on. Its up to you but if your indoor space is big enough I would consider a 450 and just go from there.

            Hi All,
For anyone interested, I've gone with an MCPX and I'm going to wind everything back on the tx to make it as beginner
friendly as possible. Let the fun commence!!
And again thanks to all for your advice.

            Cheers,
            Paul.

I found it easier to limit the travel adjust to 40 on aile and elev and then have dual rates at 100 with expo at 30.
These were settings that were recommended to me and I found them quite effective at calming things down.

From one newbie to another (i know nothing!!) i'm glad I did not go the MCPX route. I'm not sure what it gives you TBH. I went this route:

                Cheap 4 Channel Fixed Pitch
                Phoenix Sim
                Trex 500

                That would be my advise.

One thing the mcpx does give you is a way of learning cp without the large crash costs of a big heli.
I went co-ax, fp and then mcpx and although the mcpx is difficult at least you don't learn any of the bad habits that you pick up with the easier helis. I have been trying to spend time on phoenix but I find it so boring that I would rather just try and learn on the mcpx.
The mcpx is massive fun and can be just chucked in the boot of the car and taken everywhere as it does not need a big area to fly in.

I bought the MCPX for fun and practise. Ive had mine for just under a week crashed countless times. So far broke a rota head link on the first flight and last night broke the landing gear. Im now using this as an excuse to get some micro heli landing gear.

All in all a cheap way to learn basic flight and 3D.

Forgot to mention, I've borrowed a Phoenix Sim as well, I'll be interested to see how the mcpx on the sim compares to the real thing!
                      cheers,Paul

The small helis on Phoenix are not very good. I'd practice on the big trainer to start with. I fly a 450 and find the sim close enough for me. The biggest difference for many people is the increased difficulty of flying for real due to the increased stress level. You usually find that you can do a lot of things on the sim that you can't do for real. Usually once you can do them for real you find that its easier than the sim. I'd start with the mcpx over grass on a calm day, usually calm close to sunset. With helis you have to get to the point of being able to fly without thinking. This does take time and the older you are the longer it takes. There is usually a lot more time to correct the heli than you think. Get the trainer away from the ground on the sim and watch it. Helis are more stable than planes in many ways. The rotor stays at the same angle unless you or your trim changes it. helis also need the rotor slightly down on the right to hover, and will move to the left on take off until corrected. I'm not sure if flybarless goes into a stable hover or not. I'll have to try the sim. After a while you tend to just fly a heli without always being aware of exactly what you are doing.

Unfortunately for me the sim mcpx is nothing like how the heli behaves for real, i have a few custom files that are closer but still dont behave the same way when trying forward flight, hovering is easy and quite realistic though.
