  • Nervous excitement

Later today I Take to the Sky's with my new Trex 450, I've been making a diary and added up I have amassed just over 36 simulator practice hours flying the default 450 in Phoenix ready for this day.

I have my training gear ready to attach, Pip's going help me take my first CCPM powered flight and training and I'm well excited, as unlike my BCX2 which had some costly repairs in the early days, due to the size of my livingroom and never having so much flown anything Chopper like, this time at least I have plenty of hours behind me to prepare for the real thing.

I know the real thing is going to be scary at first, but the excitement now (for me) is like a six year old on Christmas day morning.

So I'll be arriving at the gym just before five to finally fly the real thing.

    Yay

Good luck Wayne, Your first flight out in the open air is always a tummy rumbler but take it steady and "Fly the heli" Don't let it fly you.

Looking forward to your report back.

I am going flying this afternoon and looking forward to it myself.

                          The Day After.....

Well in a nut shell it was terrifying, the sim practice had been helpful, but where my BCX2 TX only needed minute adjustments to keep the Phoenix 450 in a stable hover or general movements, the real thing and the DX6 required more stick movement.

At best I managed 1-2 second hover before I bottled it, the chaps there said this was normal "first time" flying jitters and lack of confidence, also the spooling up speed was something new, again at the time once instructed in the basics do's and don't, this was the least of my problems.

I think the thought of damaging her on my first outing, different stick movements in the amount needed to alter flight directions, and pure and total terror having the real thing sitting there just waiting to lift off set me in "Oh shit what am I doing" mode.

Everyone else said my first time was pretty much how there's turned out, maybe I was expecting too much from the hours of sim practice I'd put in, but I can honestly say sim and the real thing are miles apart, and in a real life situation practicing with a all singing and trying to dance 450, demands massive respect, and not the gun ho I've tended to regard as normal on Phoenix due to the "no loss" expect when hitting the deck time and time again.

So all in all it was a humbling experience and after ten minutes of attempting to fly time, I was ready for a good sit down and watch the others.

Well its nice to see you enjoyed your day Wayne but I cannot agree with your comment above sadly.

I would say its almost identical to the real thing and if you can fly the sim quite steady then the real thing is just a fraction different.

I've tended to regard as normal on Phoenix due to the "no loss" expect when hitting the deck time and time again.
Spot on Wayne, You have experienced the real deal when out using your beloved model, You are frightened to let the stick go and get it in the air.

I can be Trevor Burley/Ashley Davies on the sim but get out there with the model at full revs in idle up 2 is mind boggling..

Your guts is churning over that much when you first start that you are shaking..

The more stick time in the field will overcome the fear of ditching your precious heli mate.

Just keep at it and get out as much as possible.

Hover the heli until its easy then take the next step, Figure eights and circuits.

Hope this helps chum, We have all been there.
