  • 1200W Car Battery Power Inverter

Now we can park in our club field I was thinking about getting one of these to charge my lipos. Would this be ok to use with my Pl8 to charge 2 x 5000mah lipos?

Why not just clamp straight onto the car battery?

Just thought it would help charge them faster. Or have I totally got it wrong?

The generator isn't far off being finished.

        id just wait for that.

You definitely don't want to convert 12v to 240v and then to 24v it's full of inefficiency and your car battery will be dead within a single charge

Everytime you convert electricity from AC to DC or DC to AC you waste energy because of the inefficiency of the conversion. Just connect the PL8 to the battery.

Be careful though because car batteries are fine for the odd charge or for charging smaller batteries but if you start charging 6S battereis then you do run the risk of over discharging your car battery. If you want to regularly charge bigger batteries then a generator is a much better way to do it IMO.

Yeah I run in to this problem a few weeks ago, ended up buying a generator. No point converting power up and down your just wasting energy. Pl8 direct to the battery would work but as said, you won't get many charges out of the battery before you end up having bump starting your car (good luck if its an automatic) lol

12V lead acid batteries like to be kept fully charged. They drop their volts as soon as you take current out and the volts rise as soon as you put them on charge. When used to start cars they don't last that long, and an old one is much worse than a new one. If your car starts easily and the battery is new you can manage to take 5 to 10 amps out for an hour. If the battery is old and the car doesn't start first time you could get stuck. Unless you have a charged lipo that you can use to power your charger and then you can charge the car battery back up. I use some old 17AH batteries from the disability scooters. They get scrapped when they can't deliver lots of amps, but are still ok for our use. You can get them for free so long as you promise to take them to the tip eventually. Businesses have to pay, we don't. They don't seem to mind being flattened, it can improve them, so long as they are charged up again as soon as possible.

I charge straight off the car but just leave it running when doing so. I think most car alternators are fairly grunty so are more than enough to run the charger and the car battery doesn't feel a thing.

                    Pete,

Just wait for James' power station to arrive on site (Think of a half size Chernobyl). According to James it will produce enough juice to power a small housing estate through the depths of winter LOL .

I think we will get credits from the National Grid once he connects it to the pylons.....

Might have to drive the FLT to James' house as I don't think his car will carry it........
